SMU on College GameDay

Postby RGV Pony » Sat Sep 09, 2006 10:11 am

So Corso & Fowler had Craig James on via satellite to comment on Texas-Ohio State. Before going to break, Fowler points out that, "it's important that you know, it was 27 years ago this week that SMU unveiled the Pony Express, with Dickerson...and his understudy Craig James."

Sadly, most of the Texas fans in the background probably thought of SMU much the same way we all think of Rice. "They were good once?"

I'm sure James LOVED being called an 'understudy.'

Someone on one of the national shows mentioned also that the last #1 vs # 2 regular season game held in Austin TX was nearly 50 years ago involving Texas vs. SMU led by one Kyle Rote......

Was that the last time that SMU was ranked #1 in football?

No it is not.
SMU was deemed National Champions three different years.

Craig James is still upset that he left ESPN for CBS - at the time a better job, which in short time became a failed NFL network (when FOX took over the NFC)

He's been trying ever since to get back to his former esteemed status.

Kurt Herbst. took his golden boy spot and hasn't looked back.

Lesson: the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
