SEC to ACC?

Postby Nacho » Tue Jul 01, 2003 1:11 pm

I predicted S Carolina to the ACC last week. You guys need to start listening to me. I also predicted that Tulane would stay in d-1 and that the ACC would expand. Also in 1915 I predicted that man would one day walk on the moon. I'm glad nobody's on vacation this week.

Frankie doesn't know his ACC history...

USC was a charter member of the ACC and spurned those schools for the SEC. There has always been tremendous bitterness across the conference, and I doubt they would get the votes from Virginia, Maryland, Duke, UNC, Wake or NC State.

I know about SC and their history with the ACC. The point is that some school from the SEC may go to the ACC. All I know is that I'm a lot better at this than Andy Katz.

Can you imagine if they pried Florida out of the SEC?

(Wait - what do you mean "walk on the moon?")

I was referring to Broyles, who predicts USC's departure in the article you posted a link to...

I know Soutland.

Going to the ACC Florida, Georgia and SC make the most sense geographically. Vandy however is my dark horse. They make up for the VT fiasco, at least academically; they could compete in basketball and would give Duke a good football game..

To parpaphrase a famous quote: 3 stages in a discovery: First, people deny that it is true; then they deny that it is important; finally they credit the wrong person.

I still think Notre Dame is the ACC top choice right now, and remember Gene Corrigan the old ACC Commissioner is now the Notre Dame AD. SC went independent first, and then got invited to the SEC. They couldn't stand staying in a conference with North Carolina and Duke. Clemson would like them back. But they burned some bridges, and I suspect that they would get blackballed. For some really bizarre reason, Vanderbilt is the name I keep coming back to for the last slot. Duke, Wake, and UVa. need a weak sister with them. That would be the team I would suspect might get an invite.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Vandy would be a good fit with the ACC, but that won't happen. First, this is all about football revenue and Vandy adds nothing to the pot. The ACC already has Wake and Duke, so adding another traditionally weak football team makes no sense. Second, Vandy will never leave the riches of the SEC. Remember, Nashville is centrally located in SEC country and schools like Tenn, Alabama, Auburn, etc. routinely fill Vandy's home football games (think 1980s SMU versus UT games in Dallas where orange was far more prevalent than red and blue). It is unlikely that schools like UNC, Virginia, Maryland, etc. would provide the visitors' gate Vandy needs to survive. Based on the forgoing, Vandy doesn't get the call.

I imagine the ACC is going to test the 12 team championship rule first and try to get a waiver of that rule. That process will take at least a year. Next, they'll try to get another Miami-like football school like Penn St., ND, or a state school from the SEC. Assuming they get the waiver, they won't need another team. That said, I think the ACC won't expand again for a while.

I read a lot of speculation on this board of the ACC trying to get Notre Dame. I don't really understand it though. From the ACC's perspective, the attraction is obvious. But why would Notre Dame want to align itself with a conference in which every other member is in the Southeastern U.S.?

Notre Dame is smack dab in the middle of Big 10 country, and didn't want to join that conference. Why would they want to join the ACC then? I just don't get the idea of a conference in which the schools run down the atlantic coast from Maryland to Florida. . . except one school that is located in northern Indiana.

After my dark horse Vandy my second in line is Florida. They are sick of the things that go on in the SEC. The SEC reminds me of the old SWC. Everbody is cheating. Teams are turning each other in. It's a mess. I know, I know, they make a ton of money but I think Florida might leave if given a chance to go to the ACC. If Spurrier were still there I would be even more sure of it.

The team to replace Florida would be A$M. UT would then go to the Pac10 along with Colorado. Missouri would then go to the Big 10. How does that rock the Big 12?

Guys, don't get so carried away about the suddenly robust ACC robbing the SEC or adding ND. But if Frank Broyles is speculating about USC, we have to listen carefully to what he may be trying to do. He is shrewd and this is part of a high stakes game right now. After all he was part of the changes that started all of this reconfiguration when the SEC raided the SWC. At least little fish like SMU in the WAC might feel reassured knowing that even the sharks are antsy right now.

Exactly. When Frank Broyles speaks you better listen. He's not just flapping his gums as they say in Arkansas (and Texas). Is this a message? Some kind of code to those in the know?
