John Saunders sugar coat?

Postby Mustang98 » Wed Nov 01, 2006 5:55 pm

Did anyone catch John Saunders trying to sugar coat where SMU is now compared to the Pony Express days? He was saying that the fan base compares every team to the National Champion team of 1982. Last time I checked every school tries to restore former glory each fall (i.e. Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma, etc.) Isn't that the point of competing? Yes, I know we are in Conference USA, but it's obvious guys like Saunders from the Northeast want to let SMU fans down lightly by saying that we are holding our standards too high. I know he is trying to be nice and PC, but we all know what he wants to say and that is that SMU is not on ESPN's radar screen unless we go 8-4, 9-3, or 10-2. I guess that means one thing: Win out this season and maybe next year Saunders and ESPN2 can make more than one visit to the Hilltop.

I just got to that part of the recording. I was really cracking up because he said "Here's the problem with SMU..." then he took about a 5 second pause while the camera zoomed in on Bennett. After allowing the image to sink in, he finished with the bit about being compared to great SMU teams of the past.
