SMU Hires New Associate A.D. For Compliance
DALLAS (SMU) - Jeff Konya has been hired as SMU's new Associate Athletic
Director for Compliance, Director of Athletics Steve Orsini announced today.
With over a decade of experience in the field, Konya comes to the Hilltop after serving as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance at Memphis.
"Jeff Konya is a nationally-recognized leader in compliance and he will be a welcome addition to our staff," said Orsini. "We want to run a model program across the board and having a top-notch compliance officer like Jeff is imperative as we move forward as an athletic department."
At Memphis, Konya coordinated all compliance efforts and served as the representative to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He directed Memphis' Life Skills program and created compliance and Life Skills websites. He also worked as an adjunct professor at UM, teaching a course entitled, "Legal Issues in Athletics."
From 2003 to 2005, Konya served as the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Eligibility at UTSA and coordinated all the compliance efforts for the Roadrunner athletic department. He developed the department's first compliance manual and originated UTSA's compliance web site and the compliance "Tip of the Game" marketing program. Konya also supervised the Office of Academics and served as the department's administrator for eight athletic programs.
In addition to his compliance and eligibility duties, Konya assisted in game operations at the 2004 NCAA Final Four and the 2003 NCAA Tournament South Regional when UTSA served as host for those men's basketball postseason events. He served as a men's basketball radio color analyst for select Roadrunner broadcasts and as an adjunct professor in the UTSA Departments of Kinesiology and Philosophy.
After earning his J.D. from Iowa in 1998, Konya worked for a year as a staff attorney for The AYCO Company, L.P., in Albany, N.Y., before returning to college athletics. Konya earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in politics from Princeton University in 1995 and was a member of the Princeton Tiger football team in 1991.
