I just can't believe that they are doing it . . .firing him and then naming a facilty after him lets you know where UNT stands!!
Sports, and all that implies.

To me, this opens the door to allowing too much spending control. Having alums who loyally give to the university or the athletic department or one particular team is fine, but allowing the alums to dictate what it is on which that money is just begging for problems.

Have to; it's legally required. If an alumnus gives money to the school and says specifically that they want it used for something, they have to use it for just that purpose. I know this from working in our own Development Office (thankless job) - a guy gave money that he wanted spent specifically on a tuba for the band - random, but we said okay, thank you very much.

The question is how far along in spending the money did the university find out that he wanted the facility named after Dickey. (I don't remember reading anything about when) If they knew before they fired him, then too bad for UNT - name it or give the money back. If he told them only after they have spent the money, they may have a case to make that it's too late, albeit one that would run the booster off.

The money was given two years ago, I believe. I think they could have legally said that they agreed to name it for the donor and stick with it, notwithstanding the donor's subsequent wishes. They change it now, it is only as a courtesy.

And they'd look even more foolish, if that's even possible, by changing it back after it has been widely reported that they are naming it after their already-been-fired lame duck coach.
