Serious football question re: Rice game

Postby Billy Joe » Mon Nov 27, 2006 12:17 pm

For anyone that attended the game or knows the answer to this question:

Why did we not have more double teams against Rice's main receiving threat Dillard? It appears he is their only big time player on offense and he had an all-star day against us. I assumed the coaches would double him all game and make the other guys beat us. Or did Dillard just beat our double teams? I appeciate any comments. Thank you.

Only double teamed once that I remember and I believe we intercepted the pass.

He was well covered all day. The kid is legit and hands-down routinely makes the best in-air body adjustments of any receiver I've ever seen. He shredded Florida State, Texas, UCLA and everyone else.

Nonetheless, in the 4th quarter, make Rice beat you with anyone other than the finalist for the Biletnikoff.

Those are the poor coaching decisions everyone's talking about. We didn't make the correct adjustments to stop Dillard. If you'll remember the receiver Idris Moss from Tulsa was having his way with us in the first half and we made adjustments to shut him down.

While, Dillard was never "wide open" I wouldn't go so far as to say he was "well covered". Every pass he caught was on a 1 on 1 situation where he had a step on whoever was defending him. Our defender was pretty close to him, but that guy could go up and catch anything.

The one time we did double cover him with one guy short and one guy deep , we got an interception.

Not sure why we didn't double cover him or at least have the Safeties cheat over to his side and keep an eye on him. On everyone of those catches he made, a SMU safety was nowhere to be seen. Not sure where the blame lies, but when a team only has one playmaker on offense, you would figure you try your darndest to cover him with more than one person.

If you remember how Rashaun Woods torched us - you'll get the picture.

I am not making excuses for anybody but Dillard is a freak. He caught three TD's four times this year and one touchdown in every other game.

The guys is 3rd in the NCAA in scoring; the next wide receiver is 29th.

20 TD's on the year . . . so far.

A very good point, he is definitely a stud, my only problem is that if he was making those spectacular TD catches over 2 or 3 Mustangs, good for him....no room to [deleted].....but the fact remains that he was in single coverage on all three of his TDs......

I remember him continually torching our single coverage and even more than that our coaching staff's reluctance to roll any help the way of our DBs covering him...

actually we weren't in single coverage against woods... oops insider information, Ro had help over the top, but didnt get there in time... the two guy who were playing safety that game were moved to linebacker since they didnt have the speed to play safety, and im not talking about Harper.... but i could see how somebody in the stands would think we were in single coverage
