I always felt Bennett went to the spread because it was "en vogue" and "fun" and telling kids you were going to fling the ball around would help recruiting.
That would be the logical story to tell. And I'd say that had probably worked out pretty well. I'd say our offensive talent is significantly better than the team in 2003.
What an opening statement: "SMU football coach Phil Bennett's job is secure, according to statements made by SMU athletic director Steve Orsini in his online blog Monday."
One problem - there is NOTHING in Steve-O's blog that says Coach Bennett's job is safe, or that it's at risk. It says only that his performance and status is being evaluated. Do the guys on that site have access to another blog that the rest of Mustang Nation knows nothing about? That's as far-fetched a conclusion as could be drawn from that blog entry.
Also, as long as we're spending money, we need to double Bennett's recruiting budget.
I'd also like to see Dat Nguyen added to the staff. As a related thought, for business I work with a lot of start-up companies. One of the inevitabilities of start-ups is high turnover until you get the right people in the right places. I don't see how putting a new coaching staff together can be any different. O.K., instead of talking about who's getting canned, let's talk about who should be untouchable. My votes: Phil Jerry Joe Sawyer (maybe an even better recruited than Jerry and the DL was always ready to go to war) Chuck Faucette (singlehandedly changed the size of the Mustangs) And maybe Larry Edmondson (I saw very few dropped balls this year although I can't judge how well the receivers were getting open -- other than Bobby Chase who was open all the time but often ignored).
No...actually, it said the football program is being evaluated.
About damn time, too. I think we should go to the NFL game program format, where every week at least one cheerleader or pom pon girl is featured with bikini pics and such. Orsini is definitely progressive if he gets this done.
somebody is in a good mood today
