This is interesting. Tech underachieves in the Big XII, given our advantages. Exactly what are the advantages we have over UT? A&M? Oklahoma? Nebraska?
Given the huge geographic disadvantage Tech has (i.e. 300+ miles from any major metropolitan area) it seems to me that our record against UT and A&M is pretty damned good. We haven't done much against OU lately, but that's not a real exclusive club.
I guess you can say that within the Big XII South, we have an advantage over Baylor and OSU. Okay, here's our history against OSU since the advent of the Big XII:
1996: Tech 31 Okie St. 3
1997: Tech 27 Okie St. 3
1998: Tech 24 Okie St. 17
1999: Tech 21 Okie St. 41
2000: Tech 58 Okie St. 0
2001: Tech 49 Okie St. 30
2002: Tech 49 Okie St. 24
I won't even bother to post the Baylor results.
So exactly where has Tech underachieved?

In short - Tech has not managed to have a break out season where you win a championship. You win an occasional big game against UT and the Agdogs, but it just seems to me you are the perinial middle of the packers. And why does being 300 miles from civilization hurt your football team? believe me - back in the early 90's we would have loved to have been far from the media - Also - Tech is a huge school with huge alumni numbers, and you have enough patsy courses to always keep the more challenged footballers treading water in school until they use up eligibility - all big advantages. It just seems to me by now you guys should have knocked on the door more seriously.

The distance and general perception of Lubbock are always thrown out as reasons we can't ever recruit the super blue chips. It also affects attendance. The distance is a big reason more Tech alums from the metroplex don't go have season tickets.

Advantages over SMU, yes. Advantages over the schools we're trying to overtake in the Big XII? Nope.
Tech was one win away from the championship game last year. If you think that is underachieving when playing in what is arguably the toughest division of the toughest conference in college football, then that's your problem.
Given the competition in the Big XII South, just posting a winning record is a major accomplishment.

Now you are staring to sound like us - we were only one (fill in blank here)away from being the best (fill in blank here) blah , blah blah... However you want to rationalize the middle of the road, when it is all said and done you are still in the middle of the road, and its a pretty forgettable place to be. Plus - if I were a betting man, I would guess this year that OSU jumps over you, leaving only Baylor. Stillwater ain't no better then Lubbock, but they aren't making excuses, have their program on the upswing, and I think they have had OU's number recently?

I dream some day to be "middle of the road" like Tech if it means that one day SMU can say they had beaten the Aggies 6 out of 8 years, UT 3 out of 6 years and had victories in the last 4 years over OU, Kansas St, OSU, Missouri, Iowa St, Colorado in conference and numerous other non-conference victories. Tech has had 15 more meaning victories since the DP than SMU's most meaningful victory. If Tech's "middle of the Road" then SMU must be "Bottom of the Barrell".

this is not a comparison of SMU and Tech - there is none at this point and nobody said otherwise - this is a comparison of Tech to what they should be - at least once in the last dozen years or so - champions of something - thats why they are underachievers, and they only beat Ut and A&M in years when they also lose enough games to ALMOST get there.

some people have a hard time dealing with reality. Tech should have expected a Big XII championship by now??? I think it's pretty impressive that Nebraska has been knocked from their lofty perch. It's schools like Iowa State, Kansas State, Okie St and TTech being competitive that has caused that to happen. This conference used to be the Big 4 an little 8. Now, except for Kansas and Baylor, it's a rock solid football conference.
