From the UH blog in the Houston Chronicle:
Briles has decided to bypass a gig coaching in the Hula Bowl, which will be played Jan. 14 in Honolulu, so he can take care of business back here in Houston. With the departure of Jason Phillips to Baylor, the Cougars need a wide receivers coach/heavy-hitting recruiter, so Briles feels he's been forced to stay here and get that done.
Hmmm... a free week in Hawaii with minimal responsibilities, or stay here in the office and work... Let's flip a coin on that one.
Coach, bist du verrucht, oder was? (yeah, a little bilingualism for ya, courtesy of my high school German class)
"They may never ask me back at the Hula Bowl, but right now this is too important," Briles said. "Besides, I think I'd feel guilty hanging out there for a week while this (the new hire) is hanging over my head."
Briles, who said he will interview five candidates, expects to have the WRs coach done in a couple of weeks.
By the way, bist du verrucht, oder was? means, "are you crazy, or what?" Hey, a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Briles is a tireless worker and a big part of UH's success on the field. I gotta admit I too think he might be a little crazy for passing up the trip, mostly from a program exposure standpoint but I guess he knows his priorities best.
