Irving was a championship winning band director at Brackenridge High in San Antonio before he came to SMU. I played football for another school back then, but dated a majorette at Brack. I went to their pep rallies and Dreibrodt could stir up the crown to support his team like none other. After he came to SMU, there were many years when the highlight of a football game was the Mustang Band, and it was about all we had to cheer about. He was a class act and I shall miss him as much as Lamar Hunt.
