The Rumor Mill

Postby I AM » Tue Aug 26, 2003 1:04 pm

Former Air Force cornerback, speedster Charles Akinyemi, in now enrolled at SMU. Akinyemi is a native of Sugar Land Texas (Marine Military) and goes 5'8, 178. Don't have any other stats at this time, but supposedly he was the fastest player for the Falcons last year. Seen here putting the flying foo on some kid from Army.

Love those kind of rumors. I'm guessing he would be ready to play next fall, assuming the rumor is true?

He's on the roster, sharing jersey #10 with Matt Rushbrook.
Don't know if he's eligible.

What roster are you looking at? Official SMU website has Chuck Zars sharing #10 with Rushbrook.

A friend of mine was at SMU's Media Day and faxed me a copy of the roster they handed out. I have no idea how up-to-date it is, but there's no mention of Zars on it.

If he played at Air Force last year, then he cant be eligible this year.

But Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry reportedly gave him his release. So wouldn't that make him eligible immediately?

No!!! For the last time, a football player that transfers between D1A schools has to sit out a year, even if he is granted his release. We went through this all in the Foy Munlin discussion.

Anthony Schlegel was also given his release by Fisher DeBerry, please note this quote from Ohio State's website:
"Enrolled at Ohio State in April and took part in spring drills … a transfer from the Air Force Academy, where he lettered the past two years … will have to sit out the 2003 season and will become eligible for game competition in 2004"

If SMU were a D1-AA school, then he could be eligible right away (ala Josh McCown, when he transferred) but as long as SMU is trying to claim D-1A status, then players transferring from other schools must sit a year.

Yeah, Coach Bennett mentioned this guy at the "Coffee with Coach" the other morning. He is on the team.

I would like to apologize to all you suckas for my non-sports related post above... but I figure when foo's start arguing about things they AGREE on... it time to take a little break, and let the testosterone levels settle down

I admire your aesthetics MT, but unfortunately I was asked to zap it.
