Move Forward from DP20

Postby Mustang98 » Mon Feb 26, 2007 11:54 am

The "Black Sunday" post and thread was sad, funny, interesting, and depressing all at the same time. Now that we have all argued and hashed out the anniversary of that dark day in 1987, we need to move forward. There is a group of us part of the Mustang Club's Morgan Campaign working hard to reach out to young alums who we know and some who we don't know to get our membership numbers up. It's not the dollar amount each alum gives (dollar amounts go higher as we become more successful and the better the team plays) that's important, but becoming a member of the Mustang Club. On February 25, 1987 we had almost 3,000 members in the Mustang Club. Last year we had a little over 1,600. The campaign in just two weeks is off to a great start, but we have more work to do. Tell any alums you know that we are turning the corner. Our goal is 2,000 members and I think we can do it. Go Ponies!

here's a suggestion...try everything possible to get current students and young alums to join for $50 a year. Give them some benefit to make it worthwhile and HOPE they will attend games and come to enjoy doing so. SMU needs to build a fan base for the future and it's not going to come from older alums who have abandoned the program or from those who were here during the past 20 years where SMU seems to have gone out of it's way to alienate students/fans.

Calls are definitely being made as fast as we can make them. I would be happy to give information to anyone who is interested. Just PM me!

There are so many people to be contacted and only so much time to do it....so for those who haven't renewed, please do! And bring a friend with you!

Yes, material/pledge cards have been mailed. What I have noticed is that some of the folks on my calling list have not received anything because the mailing address on the Mustang Club records are out of date, i.e., people have moved during the year and the Mustang Club has not been notified of the address change.

If you're interested in renewing your membership and have not received the information in the mail or are joining for the first time and you don't want to deal with anyone on this site, you can always renew on line at:

If they want more Mustang Club members, they could start by going back to more traditional uniform colors and getting rid of that stupid navy blue helmet.

SMU is not navy blue and red! Talk about alienating alumni...

the bright red isn't bad, but the powder blue with a little red would be a nice return.
go smu.

I am with you Hunter! Bring back the powder blue in some form. That powder blue and white was simple, yet sweet.

I liked the uniforms from 2000-2002. The white helmets with navy jersey and white pants were especially good. I wouldn't mind using the red jerseys for homecoming or for special occasions such as ND does with the green jerseys. However, we need to stop changing our uniforms with every coaching change. Uniform changes can only hurt our branding and building an identity with the public. ND, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. do not change there uniforms year in and out. They have built an identity with their uniforms. We should do the same. Pick something that looks good and stands the test of time and stick with it!

I agree. My favorite helmets were the white ones with the red horse. I didn't like the red helmets with the white horse because they looked too much like the Hogs helmets. The Pony Express uniforms were classics. The best team money can buy looked good in those uniforms.

POWDER blue? Are you guys blind?

The jerseys in the 1980s were ROYAL blue, not powder blue. Powder blue is the color UNC and UCLA wear, what the Houston Oilers used to wear. Powder blue = baby blue. Ugh.

Maybe you guys are being funny, because Ken Pye DID want to change SMU's primary color to powder blue with "flecks of red" as I recall. In other words, he wanted SMU to look like the Oilers. There was going to be a surprise unveiling after Christmas break with new basketball unis, cheerleader unis, etc. You might recall that back then the school seal in the center of the Moody floor was painted a lighter blue. Fortunately, enough people with enough power and common sense got wind of it and quashed the idea.

By the way, as great as those unis were in the Pony Express era, the stripes on the helmet didn't match the stripes on the pants. The helmet stripes were a solid blue-red-blue combination, while the stripes on the pants had white in between the red and the blue.

The Uniform Czar would have to deduct points for that, but it was still a classic look.

Pardon me. I said powder blue but I meant Royal Blue from the Pony Express era. Technically the school colors are Yale Blue and Harvard Red, but I like the uniforms from the Pony Express Era regardless of what the type of blue you want to call it. That blue with the simple letters "SMU" right above the numbers was the best. The Pony Express uniforms are what most people think of nationally when they still think of SMU. Perhaps the stripes on the helment and stripes on the pants didn't match, but we played great and nobody seemed to care.

I was a youngster growing up in Houston at the time and saw the Pony Express play at Rice Stadium and the Astrodome alternating years with my dad. I know that sports merchandise wasn't big back in the early 1980's like it is today, but did kids or even young adults in the D/FW area wear SMU merchandise in the Pony Express era?........talk amongst yourselves.........

SMU merchandise and bumper stickers were much more apparent in the early 1980s than they are today.

You can see a lot of 1980s-era SMU stuff on e-Bay. SMU was the "hip" school back then. When you win, the retailers jump on the bandwagon.

Plus we had SWC affiliation back then, which meant manufacturers and retailers were more likely to include SMU in their product lines. Being associated with a major conference has many perks.
