Sounds like our last TWO coaches have forgotten more football than you
will ever know

What's the name of Tech's running back? Shannon Woods?
That guy scares me. Very talented and very fast. I don't buy for a minute the comments from The Leach about how there's a competition for the job -- that's BS. I hear Woods is kind of a knucklehead who has an attitude problem, or shows up late, or something, so I'm guessing The Leach's comments are nothing more than a ploy to light a fire under the kid. With Haywood, Bonds and Rogers graduated, the new fellas need to shock us all with a stout performance in their first game, because this kid can really run.

Agree they are deeper then we are but the heat definately works in our favor - only because they get baked on the east sideline by the western sun. Our svelt offensive linemen dont have to drink as much as their hogs to stay hydrated (how is that for a reach?).

We will stay close but lose this one. After this game the season gets interesting.

We then get to play the team that beat Tech last year in Ft. Worth.

Pony's beat the spread, and we should all bet the over.

This has nothing to do with anything really...but this kid is an 09 prospect that Texas Tech just offered:

Odessa Permian sophomore Garrett Porter is certainly not the average 16-year old. Besides holding a 4.0 GPA and having a hobby of jamming out to his electric guitar, the 10th grade phenom walks the halls of Permian boasting his 6-foot-6, 301-pound frame. Many have noticed as schools around the country have come calling, find out how the Red Raiders have been the most aggressive thus far.

Anyone else seem to find it a little off-putting that there are sophmore's in high school that are 6'6 and THREE HUNDRED POUNDS. Damn that's a big, big kid.

A friend of mine was about that big in 10th grade (he doesn't play football). He's now about 6'9" but the weight is about the same. Hopefully, he'll be rooming with me next year at SMU

I think you are 100% right. We were saying the same thing this time last year. We all thought Barron Batch would come in and win the job over unmotivated Shannon Woods, but as soon as the season started, no one was nearly as good as Shannon. He is just one of those guys who doesn't take scirmmages as seriously as games. That won't really cost him until he tries to make it at the next level.

Also, at 5'6, 175 I don't think Kobey Lewis is capable of being the every down back and pick up the blitzes like Woods does. That is the biggest thing for a Leach RB that people don't realize. The RB picking up the blitz is cruicial for the O and Woods does a good job.

Shannon Woods could have 1000 rushing yards next season, if we don't have a decent backup again. But it looks like Kobey Lewis is coming around and a Tennessee RB committ who wasn't supposed to qualify looks like he will. Batch may RS to let his ankle completely heal, but could play. Mike Leach likes to rotate his RBs when he can to keep them fresh, so that may keep Woods from gaining the 1000 yards. Shannon rushed for 950 yards last year.

This game will be on the shoulders of the our OC. If SMU comes out and does the delayed handoff(that has not worked since TCU 2 years ago) up the middle to DeMyron 3 times and punt then it will be a long day.

yeah but isn't awesome to watch a DT come through and actually tackle BOTH our qb and rb before the play even starts?

SMU isn't ready for a track meet

Postby Sam I Am » Thu May 24, 2007 10:21 am

After SMU dropped the men's track program, the football team followed suit. So far the offense has not shown that they can play keep up with the quick strike scoring of Tech. If we can't win that way, then the game plan has to be ball control and decent defense. If Tech takes us serioulsy and PB has his usual slow start in September, then SMU fans will be leaving for the shade berfore game's end. We need this game to fill the stadium and to keep BCS schools on the schedule, so we'll take our lumps and move on.

The way to beat a Mike Leach team is to run the ball successfully & tackle the receivers as soon as they catch the ball, thus avoiding the big play.

Don't worry about Bennett's slow start, we start slow under Leach too.

Well all the motivation the team needs to fix their tackling woes is to watch the footage from last years game in Lubbock.
