From the Big 12 Media Day gathering:
• Desperate times call for desperate measures
Coach Mike Leach placed an advertisement in the student newspaper this spring, hoping to find a replacement for graduating senior Alex Reyes.
“There were 38 of them,†Leach said. “I was surprised with how many I got. And will all due respect because I’ve tried some things I’ve failed out dismally, there were some guys who didn’t belong out there.â€
How bad were some of the stragglers?
“Let’s put it this way,†Leach said. “There were some guys that I could have outkicked, but my hat is off to them for trying.â€
• Good thing Tech is coming to Dallas
Tech coach Mike Leach again was the hit of media days among reporters. When he wasn’t talking about NCAA gambling prevention films or his recent European vacation, he was describing how inhospitable Lubbock can be for visiting teams.
“It’s very savage to play in Lubbock,†Leach said. “I would recommend that everybody try to avoid it. There have been scalpings and there have been some people that quite just haven’t returned.
“There are some people, unfortunately, based on the way the conference goes, that are going to have to come to our place. Sadly, I can’t guarantee their safety or that things will necessarily go the way that they like.â€
Opponents should consider themselves warned. The Red Raiders are 35-9 at home in Leach’s coaching tenure, including 13 victories in their last 15 games.
