The way they got recognition was to send out free tix for distribution to virtually every high school in the metroplex. Not sure why we are afraid to use the same approach these days.

This is why I am on the "lets wait and see band wagon". It is possible they have ideas like this, or maybe some better ones. I would almost imagine that SMU fared better attendance wise during Mustang Mania than they did during the Pony Epxress days. (I am speaking of SMU attendance, not total attendance.) Even if they use a different base slogan, the total campaign may be one that does bring some people out to the games. Let us give it a chance. Lord knows we are all good at putting blame where it belongs, and a few other places too. Maybe we might have to hone our complimentary skills a little.

I don't know Eddie P, I remember getting and using tix at my HS in Garland. We weren't very good in any sports, so I doubt there was any recruiting violation going on there.

Is that where you perfected your "get in and move to another, better seat", skills?

It was so easy back then. Come to think of it, it still is.

I think we are going to need that "broader audience". I think we only have about 7,000 undergrad.

It'd be nice to have more of the undergrads show up...I mean does half of the UG even show up? The rest of the audience can be boring, no offence. Then there's the annoying children running around screaming for gloves and anything stinky the football players wear...

I liked the kids. I remember feeling pretty good when they would ask me for stuff. Kids grow up to be long term fans. We should brainwash them while we can. :D

They at least have the play area for the very young ones that do not care to watch.

That's me :!:

I was brainwashed by my Dad at an early age having to listen to SMU
beating Roger Staubach, and the #2 in the nation 63 Navy team 32- 28
over the radio. Then I was forced to travel long distances from
Longview to Dallas to go see SMU beat Arkansas 14 - 7 in the Cotton
Bowl that same year.

I got even however. I decided to go to SMU after HS, and forced him to
help me with the exorbitant tuition rates :!:

That's me too! Except for the tuition. My Dad is a prof at SMU.... so I've been going to games as long as I can remember. And it worked out for him when I went to the school, he didn't have to help me out with exorbitant tuition... at another school.

the simple fact is that SMU has never tried the sell the program since Mustang Mania. Eddie P. is right-the past has shown that simply giving away tickets to high schools doesn't really work. You've got to hit them with the advertising media blitz that Mustang Mania was-and it was the greatest College Football media blitz in the history of college football. SMU had a losing record and attracted 6,000 fans to the Cotton Bowl against Rice on one of the most beautiful football days ever. The next time they played 60,000 were in attendance,. Have things changed? Yes. I have no doubt having seen Potts/Thomas campaign first hand that they could fill every unsold seat in Ford if you gave them 6 months to come up with a plan.

Go to www.smu.edu. Click on the 'athletics' link. Here's what you'll see:

Could this computer wallpaper soon be popping up as billboards around the Metroplex, too? Stay tuned.

Somehow I doubt it will say "Click here for season tickets". Though that sort of sounds like the Click it or Ticket billboards.
