I really don't think this is a bad marketing gimmick. Traditional billboards et al will just go completely ignored by the average Dallasite. It's time to try something a little different.

thefamousguy wrote:That "Pony Up" campaign has to be the cheesiest thing I've seen in a while. Rodeo cowboys have been saying "Cowboy Up" for a while and this is simply a cheap take upon the commonly used rodeo term. Furthermore, that sorry arrow and our pony logo is a poor way to convey the "Pony Up" message. Anyone on here saying otherwise has a connection to the Richards Group.
Not to blow your etymology lesson here, but the Phrase "Pony Up" predates the phrase "Cowboy Up" by a good margin. In fact, "Pony Up" predates the concept of the Cowboy, or the Rodeo (as we know it anyhow) by a great deal.
Did the use of the phrase Cowboy Up influence the decision to go with the Pony Up Campaign? Perhaps. But it's not a Phrase that the Richards Group just originated.

I agree. As far as billboards go, this would seem very similar to the FW Star Telegram billboards. In case you didn't see them, they had phrases like, "George Bsh", "Fel Prices", "Cowboys Stadim", and other words and phrases missing "U". These went up as just teaser billboards and didn't even say what they were advertising. Radio and news shows were talking about them. Finally, they revealed that it was for the FWST. You still see the billboards, except now they have the FWST information at the bottom. Because it was a little different, it caught people's eyes and got people around the metroplex talking.

Like I have stated before, I think everyone will be very pleased with our commercials when they get on air. I think they turned out great.
Take a look at memphis's football ad, and then be very very thankful for the richards group and the SMU ad department....

Sort of reminds me of that 7-up campaign. Make 7-up yours. With the words "make 7" on the front of the tee shirt and the rest of the slogan on the back.

The Mempho commercial is pretty ridiculous.
At my AARO session my freshman year they were selling polos that had PONY UP embroidered on the collar to where the collar had to be popped to see it. Disgusting, eh?

Okay that was a little too harsh on my part.......
In other news, I have decided am fully on board with the graphic/Pony Up.... I was never not on board, I just wasn't sure. As I said in the beginning I like the slogan, and do not equate it with our scandalous past (I think that's a stretch) ... though the graphic I was unsure of... in the sense that I liked the fact that it was simple clean and conveyed a positive message, but I just wasn't 100% on it.
But the more I see it... the more I'm thinking yeah, that works.
I made it my desktop wallpaper so I could do a test on myself... would I (a) absolutely grow to loathe it, (b) become blasé about it, or (c) really start to appreciate it.
It turned out to be (c)..... and I can't wait to see those commercials online.

If it really bothers some people, just pretend it says Mustangs on the Rise...I heard some people under the assumption that that was what it meant until somebody clarified it but hey, it works.
