The Mustangs return 18 starters from a team that went 6-6 a year ago, including standout freshman quarterback Justin Willis and a healthy running back in junior DeMyron Martin. It might be funny to think of these perennial losers as top 20, but no one will be laughing after SMU knocks off Texas Tech on Labor Day."
I don't know about that...we will probably be laughing and yelling our heads off hysterically after we knock off Tech.
I'm guessing that "Jay Howard" (doesn't have quite the same credibillity as a sportswriter as ... say ... anyone) has written his last column for that horrible rag. The owner is a big-time Texas Tech homer and — "coincidentally," wink, wink — they normally run a story saying "this is the year Tech wins the Big 12 South, or the Big 12, or a BCS game, or .... something." Hard to believe this line was printed.

I would guess to earn a top 25 spot, SMU would have to go 12-0, 11-1 or at the outside 10-2 if the losses were key (to a top 10 team). I don't think we get there with a 9-3 record given our previous 20 year track record. I fear that this team may be under rewarded for an outstanding season because of SMU's administration's dedication to athletic failure. That said, a fabulous September (undefeated) puts us on the map.

One thing for sure, the guys are really working hard and have a great attitude about this season.

We would for sure have to have our second winning season since the death penalty.
Notwithstanding the prediction in this longstanding and well respected journal, I think the top 25 talk may be a tad premature.

20 seems to be the lucky number this year: as Emmanuel Sanders said on SportTalk tonight (8/13), Justin is 20, he is 20, it's 20 years since the DP, and the team is ready for a bowl game.

Let's start by beating the Red Raiders on Labor Day on ESPN on National TV. That would be a way to introduce ourselves properly and create a buzz. If we go 4-0 OOC, that would surprise everyone, including me.

I emailed the guy who ranked us at number 20, to make sure he wasn't sniffing glue, or was an SMU grad... turns out he's a Longhorn.
... maybe he is sniffing glue.
(But he did admit to being a rabid SMU fan as a kid... [sigh] yes, I guess he has those Pony colored glasses in the glove box too.)
