1982 National Championship Team To Be Honored At UNT Game

Sept. 5, 2007

DALLAS (SMU) - Members of SMU's 1982 National Championship team will be honored at halftime of the SMU-UNT game on Saturday. Among those expected to be in attendance are running back Eric Dickerson and quarterback Lance McIlhenny.

The event, which is part of SMU's Lettermen's Reunion Weekend, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1982 team, which finished 11-0-1, winning the Southwest Conference and earning National Championship recognition from the Helms Athletic Foundation.

National Champions? Penn State might have something to say about that.

Call the Helms Athletic Foundation and "overcusser" them out. They were foolish enough to name the only undefeated team in the country as National Champions.

I doubt that your mother would even have the audacity to name NTSU National Champions regardless of their record.

Some folks say that Penn State was named national champions that year because Joe Paterno said he would be retiring and the sportswriters gave it to them as a 'parting gift' for JoPa. He's still on the sidelines (sometimes pressbox) 25 friggin' years later.

Yeah, but OU was the highest followed by Penn ST, The Univeristy of
Texas (Don't even mess with their REFS), and Michigan.

The Cowboys back then had GREAT PLAYERS signing up to play for
