Not saying he's more handicapped than Gregg Rossley or Cavan. Just pointing out that most of the starters on that 97 team were recruited when SMu was still in the SWC, which was obviously a sizeable recruiting advantage compared to the WAC later, that's all. Voted for the same year you did. Jeez, why don't you cry about it.

Bennett himself said " I would not have taken this job under the conditions those coaches worked under." Yeah its completely fair.
You, go, Mr. Bully!!
1997 was the best team that was compromised by the worst off-field decision by Cavan to bench Donte Womack for breaking curfew instead of benching him for a series or a quarter in the TCU game that we lost to then a winless squad.

You could say that Donte "scored" a TD before the game ever started!!!!
Restrictions or no, most of those players were recruited when the SWC had not disbanded yet. That's not being completely fair is it?
Good point.

Not being in the SWC doesn't appear to have had too much of an impact on TCU's recruiting.....given their record since the demise of the SWC...............

The 1992 team did more with less against strong SWC competition. The revenge win over the UH was a classic.

true but team also had about twice as many senior letterman and more 4 year starters than any team in the country. I believe I'm correct that team had 38 SENIOR lettermen. Admitedly that team had many disadvantages and overachieved but you also have to recognize it was the saltiest veteran team in the country because of two senior classes and unequaled experience which definitely must be recognized as an advantage. See what happened the next few years when that advatage evaporated. Great year though.

Well, then what is the criteria for "best team?"
When I first read the question, I thought of the 1992 team, followed by 1997, then 1996, then 2006. I think the 1992 teams beats any other. And I barely give the edge to 1997 over 1996 because of the winning record. That 1997 team still lost to a winless TCU the last game of the year.

good point, but that is 4 wins and 1aa

That's why the NCAA has given us the FBS and FCS designations, people kept confusing I-AA with II.

I'm sure that FBS and FCS are less confusing...
