I have two problems. One is probably "generational". At one time going to a bowl meant something. Generally that you were in the top 20-25. There were 4 majors and 8-10 minors. Now days, going to a bowl, has very little meaning to me. Except for the top ten or so, the rest are not important and not worth watching. Almost 70 teams are now invited to a bowl, it really means that you had a winning season or broke even in a major conference.
The second, under this scenario, Bennett will not have had one single winning season. Not a single one! That performance do not deserve to be rewarded, on any terms. Has some progress been made, perhaps, but quite frankly it isn't satisfactory. Watching the North Texas game was as poor a played game as I've ever seen for two college teams. High school games are better played. As far as TCU, they don't have a quarterback and playing SMU isn't much of a challenge. Do you think it compares to playing in Austin? They won despite their lack of emotion, and had their receivers held onto the ball, despite the poor passing, they would have beaten us badly on the scoreboard. Bennett's comments about beating them statistically makes me laugh, if statistics counted, we would have also lost to North Texas.
wow! we agree.... im to lazy too look up your old posts.. but i know a lot of people thought that this schedule was easier then last years... not the case. the year is tougher then last year. we go 6-6, go to a bowl, i dont think phil gets fired (and i hope not) WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
If we get to a bowl game, that's irrelevant. I don't think SMU could handle the damage firing PB after getting to the first bowl game since 1984 would do to the athletic department's image. I'm not saying we should be pleased with a 6-7 season, but that would stick the university between a rock and a hard place.
If we manage to go to a bowl this year, I predict the following:
1. Bennett receives tremendous national press accolades for rebuilding a program "the right way" (no major infractions, high graduation rates in difficult majors, etc.) and SMU is credited for giving PB time to rebuild the program. 2. PB leaves on his own after being recruited by higher-tier programs for either a HC job at a mid-major school or a coordinator position at a top 30 school (like ATM) OR 3. PB stays here and Orsini requires an infusion of new talented assistant coaches/coordinators.
Instead of the word 'quit', let's say 'resign'. Now...wanna place a friendly wager on it?
Guys, I take option D...any of the above. That means fun games with W's, and who knows after that. Either way, Patton had this right 2 weeks ago...we have a very interesting next 3 months. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
This is why I was rooting for Arkansas State to win. How can anyone think a team only beating the below teams is worthy of a Bowl Game... Arkansas State 92 UTEP 94 Memphis 112 Tulane 142 North Texas 165 Rice 174 Improvement, I really don't see it and even if there was...not near enough for me.
Any SMU fan that roots for SMU to lose should be kicked in the Jimmy.

Blog,
SMU is unquestionably the worst college athletic program over the past 19 years. It is not even close…WE ARE AT THE ABSOLUTE BOTTOM and I am comparing us to over 150 schools. PB has been HC for 6 of those 19 years. I want a change. Going 6-6 by defeating cupcakes is not my idea of improvement, but I realize it keeps PB his job. It is time for him to move on and the only way for that to happen is for SMU to lose a game such as Ark State…sorry, but that is the truth of the matter. Look at Stallion’s comparison of our recent QB commitment to our peers. There will be the usual blather about the worthiness of Rivals, but once again, we are taking flyers in hopes turning around this program. It simply doesn’t work…our title as THE WORST COLLEGE ATHLETIC PROGRAM OVER THE PAST 19 YEARS proves that. And about your ‘Jimmy’ comment…as an SMU fan, all of us have been getting those kicks far too much and for far too long.
But he won't be for much longer. ![]()
