the harshness of the penalty is definitely affected by the involvement of USC personnel-that's what the NCAA's focus on lack of institutional control is all about. If USC is clean in fact and in monitoring then the NCAA will focus more on use of an ineligible player which will result in forfeiture of wins, bowl money and championships. If USC knew but looked the other way or was directly involved then I'd expect to see more severe penalties in the nature of loss of scholarships and prohibition from bowls. Is this agent a USC alumni or otherwise a representative of USC like Sherwood Blount an agent and SMU graduate?
Stallion, in the OU situation where I mentioned that there was lack of institutional control, I thought you questioned that. Maybe it was someone else. This is a classic case for lack of institutional control unless it was an agent who was looking to represent Bush as a pro.
Hey, lets talk about the serious stuff. How can the SC tennis team compete losing that scholarship, and the rowing team. What about Flathead C.C. This could be devastating to those programs. The NCAA needs to think about the ramifications.
Maybe not, since the Heisman is awarded by a non-NCAA organization. Even if the NCAA "punished" USC for violations, the presenting body could just ignore the whole thing and wait for the public interest to wane so as to not (directly) involve the award. Then again, they may not care about public perception - OJ still scrolls by with the rest of the past winners on the official website...
