Joining a BCS conference is all about the money.
Fortunately, we have a major media market for TV and more importantly a good travel date for opposing fans.
SEC would be a possibility but they are full.
PAC 10 : No way. West Coast people think Texans are all a bunch of hillbillies and liars. Don't have the sophisication for their tastes.
Big 12: While there is overlap we are:
1. A good travel date. DFW would be the largest B12 town. Austin currently holds the crown.
2. Great way to connect with local alums. We know TT, UT and A&M are well represented here but so are OU, OSU, Kansas. Today it is all about raising money at State U.
3. A third whipping boy. The decision makers UT, OU, A&M, Nebraska don't want another tough team to beat in conference. Nothing breaks out the wallet faster than watching your team beat the local team.
SMU has about 5 years to :
1. Win games in FB and BB. Big 12 teams want to beat a good team not a pitiful team.
2. Develop a fan base (this might be the killer )
3. Do well in non revenue sports.
If we lose over the next 20 like we have the previous 20, SMU disbands its athletic program and goes DIII. Rice is beyond the point of no return and I predict will leave D1 within 10 years.
