Each week I read of our area schools struggling to gain recognition, gain respect or fill stadiums. TCU has had a quality program, but gains only minimal national respect. The once powerful University of Houston is now almost unknown. UNT struggles for credibility and SMU has trouble filling a smallish Ford Filed.
I believe that there is an easy answer to all of these issues. Revive the old SWC. A conference could be formed including 8 to 12 of the following schools.
Conference USA members SMU, Rice, Houston, Tulane, Tulsa, Memphis and UTEP.
Big 12 Conference perpetual also ran Baylor
Mountain West Conference TCU, Colorado State and New Mexico
Western Athletic Conference New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech
Sun Belt Conference UNT and Arkansas State
The result would probably create a stronger and more competitive conference, with increased regional rivalries, better crowds, lower travel costs and easier recruiting opportunities. And the regional emphasis would guarantee better local media coverage. With five states represented and a strong national non-conference schedule there would be minimal, if any, loss in national scope

Why would we want the WAC and Sun Belt teams?

Baylor's times have changed and their alum want to win as badly as we do! And yes I do know what I'm talking about. Quit slamming and think a little.

They will never leave the money behind. We are talking tens of millions of dollars a year. They have really done a great job in the other sports-with all that money. Will NEVER EVER happen voluntarily. See Vandy.

Misuse of the quote function is a sure fire way to convince everyone of general competency

So, UH, go join the WAC and enjoy the fun of travel to such wonderful locales as Boise, Id., Logan, UT, Fresno, CA, Reno, NV, and of course let us not forget La. Tech. As bad as attendance is in CUSA it is about 30% better than it was for us in the WAC. SMU/Fresno State drew 10,000 in Dallas with David Carr as their QB. Whereas, SMU/UH drew about 20,000. CUSA is a better conference for fans than the WAC ever was. And the top of the WAC is good, the bottom is not good. CUSA does not have a powerhouse team right now. But the conference is investing in better coaches, better facilities, and has decent TV exposure. Those combine to make for more long term fan interest.
