Forget coaching. There are plenty of guys out there that can coach football. There aren't many though that are nationally recognized that will make a splash and people able to recruit, which is what SMU needs. My only thing with James was that he would be a good recruiter. Put it like this, even if Bill Parcells was secretly calling the plays and coaching for SMU, it wouldn't really make a difference with crew of players we have now. We need a recruiter bottom line. Bowden would be able to do both.

I think he gets a check in every category on the hiring chart: Head coach at BCS school, successful (by our definition), played college football for a normal university, white, blonde hair, blue eyes, no mustache, not fat, speaks English, hasn't forgotten any football, hates the swinging gate, will employ a special teams coach, prefers the Pony Express uniforms (with red jerseys) and won't hire his brother. And he is smart, smart, smart. What did I leave out.

The only thing you left out is that word on the street is that he can not coach. That is not me but that is the word that I have heard. I agree he is good in every other category, but isn't his hair brown?

Don IS crazy... but maybe that has to do with his age... senile maybe?

Listen carefully because this is the last I will say on this: Bowden is not interested in the SMU job. He did not say that to me in those words, but his attitude is very non-committal almost patronizing, kind of like when you pat a 3 year old on the head when they draw you a picture you cannot make out. I suppose all you can do is trust me or not from reading him - he does not want to come to SMU. I think he could change his mind, but only if as I said he realized before its too late that he will not be offered another job if that proves true.
You spoke to Bowden personally? If you had, you probably would have heard him say some very positive things about SMU - but that he wasn't going to comment publicly about potential job openings until after the season because he needs to try to stay objective for his analyst duties.
And one thing Bowden is not is patronizing.
