From College Football News:
Player of the Midseason
B.J. Symons, QB Texas Tech
System schmystem. It's not like B.J. Symons is lighting up the dregs of college football. The senior has thrown for an unbelievable 2,954 yards and 27 touchdowns with only six interceptions against teams like Texas A&M , Ole Miss and NC State. Symons also has four rushing scores to go along with all of his passing exploits. So you think he just dinks and dunks? He's averaging nine yards per attempt..
Best Defensive Player of the Midseason - Miami S Sean Taylor
Taylor's impact goes beyond mere statistics. Taylor has 42 tackles with six interceptions and eight broken up passes, but most importantly, he's the leader of a defense that's carrying the Hurricanes in yet another national title hunt..

Biggest Surprise - California
One one starter returned to the defense and Kyle Boller was off the offense and off to the NFL. Even so, Cal has turned in a great first half of the season pulling off one of the biggest wins of the year in an upset over USC. This is a team that should be challenging Arizona for the cellar of the Pac 10, but it's not happening.
Biggest Disappointment - UCF
With all the returning talent and all the top players returning, UCF was poised for a national breakout season. Unfortunately, the Golden Knights haven't been part of the MAC coming out party completely going into the tank after Ryan Schneider got hurt.
The National Champion will be... Oklahoma
Rationally, what other team can be chosen at this point? The Virginia Tech - Miami winner will probably be in New Orleans, but no one's playing better in all areas than the Sooners are.
Best Game of the First Half
Ohio State 44 ... NC State 38 3OT - Sept. 13
A boring game turned into a thriller as NC State overcame a 17-point deficit to put the game into overtime on a five-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Williams. In the overtimes, OSU QB Craig Krenzel threw for three touchdown passes including the game winner on a laser to Michael Jenkins. NC State score on a 17-yard pass to Tramain Hall in the first overtime, and then got a T.A. McLendon run in the second. On NC State's shot in the third OT, it had the ball fourth and goal on the one, but McLendon was stopped just short of the goal line.
Worst Game of the First Half - Florida 63 ... Florida A&M 3, Sept. 13
Florida A&M hung around for about a half a quarter, and then Florida RB DeShawn Wynn really kicked it in scoring four times on the day. Chris Leak threw a touchdown pass as the Gators rolled up 537 yards and seven rushing touchdowns in the easy win.
Coach of the Midseason - Joe Novak, Northern Illinois
If you can get a MAC team into the top 12 beating Maryland, Alabama and Iowa State along the way, you're doing something right.
Player who'll step up in the second half - Andrew Walter, QB Arizona State
After a sleepy start to the season, Walter is revving up with 621 passing yards and four touchdown passes in his last two games. With North Carolina, Cal, Stanford and Arizona left to play, Walter's numbers could go through the roof.
Best performance so far - Texas Tech QB B.J. Symons vs. Ole Miss, Sept. 27
Symons completed 44 of 64 passes for 661 yards and six touchdowns with an interception. He led the Red Raiders in rushing with 18 yards and a touchdown in the 49-45 win over the Rebels.
Top Freshman - Vincent Young, QB Texas
Young is the Big XII's, and college football's, newest superstar. He's the type of player Mack Brown can revolve his whole program around.
Coach who needs to have a big second half - Joe Paterno, Penn State
Paterno will never, ever, ever be asked to step down, but Penn State has to start winning to stop all of the "has JoePa lost it" talk.
Player who needs to have a big second half - Virginia Tech QB Bryan Randall
Randall has been a tremendous player over the first half of the year. Now he has to keep it going. He's going to be the difference between a great Hokie season and a national title-level campaign.
Best remaining game - Miami at Virginia Tech, Nov. 1
Pittsburgh will have a lot to say about this in league play, but the Cane-Hokie showdown might be for the national title, and not just the Big East championship.
