Dan McCarney is an excellent coach, who got Iowa State into the Big 12 mix consistenly.

This isn't the guy I want representing SMU.

Thanks for the articles but he has zero chance of being hired here based on his horrible record. He only had a decent record for a few years because he had Seneca Wallace doing his magic.

I can be happy with practically any prior HC who has shown an ability to win and recruit. Some assistants (Stoops, Mangino, Leach etc) work out fine but after our last experience I think we have to go with a HC.

I agree with you on that. It's the "proven D-1 HC" requirement of some on this board that I think the search committee might end up getting hung up on.

Dan McCarney?

Former Iowa State HC; 56-85 in 12 years as HC; 2-3 in bowl games.

I konw who Dan McCarney is. the question was more directed at him being discussed for the SMU job. when did this come about?

I think Dan McCarney would be an excellent hire. It took a while, but he was able to get Iowa State to a place where they could compete with the Big XII and make bowl games. He was able to recruit people to a place that many players wouldn't want to go and wasn't given a whole lot of help by the university. At SMU, he would have an easier time convincing recruits to come to Dallas than Ames, Iowa. He was able to do well with very little.
