The beauty of the media is its ability to project beyond its regional borders. Bear Bryant understood this. He spent significant time in NYC (then the major media center of the nation) smoozing with the press. This not only established Alabama as a media darling but also help create Bryant as a legend.

Russ Potts and Ron Meyer understood the potential of the DFW media center. In 1978, SMU ranked 25th in the nation in total attendance. This was accomplished during a 4-6-1 season. Imagine if a media savvy Ron Meyer was SMU’s head coach in 1982. Meyer could handle the press and would the finally ranking have been different with a press savvy Meyer? One can only wonder.

If one can successful utilize the media, one can successfully increase exposure. This would help with recruiting outside a region area and improve the media fan base. One doesn't have to capture the hearts and souls of everyone in the DFW area; one just has to establish a critical mass of support. A local TV feature in DFW has the potential to reach over 5 million people. What is the advantage of a local TV feature in Hattiesburg or Waco? SMU can look very attractive to someone that desires a shot at being the big dog in a major media center.

I think more in terms of Craig James. He had exposure to major media attention which leads to other opportunities. And he now makes a very comfortable living in the media. Would James had that type of exposure and media attention had he attended Texas Tech? Possibly but less likely than in the DFW market. So yes, a player could use the media to his/her advantage as can a coach.

good point. but it all hinges on one thing...winning.

What did troy aikman say.."dallas roots for a winner" or something like that.

James was here during our winning days, which without a doubt paid off for him (no pun intended!!)

if a coach/player makes SMU a winner, then you are right and the media market in Dallas would be a huge plus!

Duke won with Spurrier before Ga. Tech, FSU, Miami, VT, and BC were added. Big difference there. If I were a coach I would look at the jobs this way from best to worst.
Michigan=best
TAM = next
Arkansas
Ole Miss
Nebraska - but its star is fading.
WSU -PAC 10
CSU - anyone can get in, beautiful location
USM - anyone can get in.
SMU
Duke -might get into a bowl game if they can get to .500 in ACC.
Baylor - don't see them ever getting to .500 in B XII
NIU - MAC

PonyinNC, you are practically right on. my two cents:

Arkansas ~ better job, period.

Baylor ~ big 12 (BCS) conference - better job, period.

Duke ~ ....more on that below.

Georgia Tech ~ ACC, better job, period.

Michigan ~ hahaha, right.

Nebraska ~ hahaha, right...

Northern Illinois ~ ...more on them, below.

Southern Miss - better job. right now, a much better program.

Texas A&M ~ much much better job than SMU. come on, fran was earning how many million more than Bennett? who are you kidding saying we will get a better hire? could we have gotten Sherman? i'll put money right now with ANYONE that we can't beat A&M next year or in the next 5.

Washington State - much much better job than SMU. pac-10, heisman candidate (reserve the Leaf jokes, he was, you can still find the leaf for heisman website) just a few years back. better program, period.

----------------------
SMU is a job in line with that of NIU or Duke. Duke has much more recall as an overall academic institution, and RDU is a very nice area. Dallas is OK (i personally love dallas), but RD is nice. NIU - ok, both the area and the school suck, but they have been a *slightly* better football program over the past 20 years.

we just finished 1-11 (and barely won the one game) in a [deleted] conference. there is NO WAY IN YOUR RIGHT MIND that you can compare the bottom of Conference USA to a mid-finisher in a BCS conference, or even a conference doormat in a BCS conference. let's be honest.

Perhaps i am spurned right now as a result of our horrendous season, but i am also a realist. let's hope Orsini has a trick up his sleeve.

Do i think we will beat A&M...no. However, I think we will get a better COLLEGE coach than Mike Sherman (has been out of NCAA for over 10 years, rode Favre's arm and still couldn't get it done)

Maybe, just maybe SMU is a better coaching job than Texas A&M Kingsville. However they still have a lot more players in the NFL so maybe not?

Ohhh lower academic standards right? The ol stand by excuse?!?!

Nebraska ~ If they don't hire Gill, maybe comes to SMU...
.
.......................I have not heard of any interest by Turner Gill in our job though I think he would be better than Kragthorpe and O'Leary.
