Why no D-IAA or DII coaches?

Maybe pluck a proven coach from a small school and pay him D1 dollars. Could work. Maybe?

Cavan did a great job for somebody not used to academic restrictions. In fact, if you drive through Valdosta or Johnson City with your window down, I hear they'll throw a diploma in your car. But he is our winningest post-DP coach. I think 1-A head coaching experience is overrated. A good head coach is a good head coach is a good recruiter is a good recruiter. In fact, I believe guys like Murphy (Hah-vud) and especially Clawson (UR), who have shown they can win consisitently under severe recruiting restrictions, might be a better fit for SMU, given our current situation.

Tim Murphy

Postby Boston Pony » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:34 pm

Before Harvard he was successful at U of Cincinnati. Went to Harvard for security & family reasons. Not sure why anyone would mention Tim Murphy's name...don't think he is going anywhere.

That guy from App St. used to be an assitant coach at SMU. I hear they're looking at Hah-vahd's HC. He used to be Cincy's HC.

App State - Jerry Moore

Postby Boston Pony » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:42 pm

Jerry Moore, great guy.... used to be HC at North Texas. Probably not moving in my mind. Has a sweat deal in Boone and is getting up in years (about 65+).

One of Copeland's biggest targets was Jimmye Layc0ck of William and Mary. Of course he wouldn't work since we can't use his name on this message board. He is of course used to working within a tough academic regimen, but he also recruits the east coast not Texas. He has a sweet deal at W&M.

He is actually 68 and was HC at Texas Tech. He was an Asst. under Hayden Fry. No way he goes anywhere in my opinion. He is very successful and happy. He is a wonderful person however.
