The dude must have his guy... with all of these "more attractive" jobs opening up, and potential coaches (Briles, Nutt, etc.) dropping like flies. He still seems confident. Truly hoping for that "wow" hire.

I think he is smart enough to not say "we are aiming high" again and not have an idea of where he is going...The more times he puts that line out there, the more on the line he is...If this is a flop hire, he set himself up by saying the wrong thing from the begining...I'm pretty sure he is smarter than that (I hope)...

It is O'Leary. You all can rest now. O'Leary is a WOW Hire. He was hired by Notre Dame.

O'Leary isn't going anywhere
George O'Leary feels at home at UCF, and he isn't going anywhere.

It keeps the message boards humming.

But there's no truth to any of it.

None at all.

All the rumor and speculation you keep hearing about George O'Leary leaving UCF for one of the 4,378 college football coaching jobs that have opened up in the last week is based on absolutely nothing. O'Leary isn't going anywhere. He is adamant that he will finish off his coaching career at UCF.

"My next job is going to be on the first tee box somewhere," O'Leary said Tuesday as his team prepared to host Tulsa in Saturday's Conference USA Championship Game. "I'm very happy here. I'm 61 years old and this is where I want to be."

But, Coach, your old job is open at Georgia Tech.

"Been there, done that," O'Leary said, squashing the Internet innuendo that he might return to Atlanta, the place where he made his coaching name. "I'm happy here. I love the state of Florida."

Says UCF Athletic Director Keith Tribble: "It would be foolish for us to think that other schools won't be interested in our coach, but we feel he's on a mission to take this program to the next level. I trust George."

I know, I know, coaches notoriously and routinely lie this time of year when asked if they are interested in certain jobs (see Saban, Nick), but for some reason I believe O'Leary. Actually, there are 5 million reasons I believe O'Leary, and they are written directly into his contract.

On Page 14, Article 9.3 of his UCF contract, it says that should O'Leary leave before his contract is up, "The parties agree that Coach's liability under the buyout is limited to a maximum cumulative payment to [UCF] of $5 million."

With all due respect to O'Leary's coaching ability and the job he's done in rebuilding UCF, there just aren't many schools willing to ante up $5 million to hire a 61-year-old coach. Well, actually, Florida State might consider it simply because, in relation to Bobby Bowden, O'Leary would be considered an up-and-coming young hotshot.

Call me naive, but even without the buyout, I don't believe O'Leary would leave UCF. Why would he? To take a job at a down-and-out BCS program like Syracuse, where he'll be fired in four or five years because he can't win there . . . because nobody can win there?

At UCF, O'Leary has the total trust and commitment of his president and athletic director. He has a bigger salary (more than $1 million a year) than many BCS coaches. He has the best job security in college football (UCF administrators couldn't afford to fire him and pay the $5 million buyout even if they wanted to). But mostly he has something at UCF that he would never have at any other program: A patriarchal sense of engenderment.

O'Leary was instrumental in getting UCF's new stadium built. He was a catalyst behind the new indoor practice facility. Even though there are many people responsible for the athletic awakening at UCF, O'Leary's name is front and center. In six or seven years, if UCF is winning championships consistently and perhaps even making a move into a BCS conference, O'Leary will go down as "The Father of UCF Football."

At UCF, he is King George. This is his program. That is his stadium. The players play by his rules.

Just the other day, O'Leary leaned on a fence outside the practice facility and looked around contentedly at the football renaissance taking place all around him. From pine trees to pigskins.

"Three years ago, this was all woods around here," O'Leary said. "You have to be proud of what we've accomplished. It gives you a feeling of ownership.

"When I took this job, I saw a sleeping giant that needed to wake up. Slowly, we've been waking up, and now we're sitting up in the bed. But we've still got to get our feet on the ground."

Maybe those feet will hit the floor on Saturday when UCF has a chance to win its first conference championship.

Get your tickets now. UCF fans often complain that their program doesn't get as much love in this city as the Gators or the Seminoles. Well, show us you deserve it. If the Gators were playing for a conference title Saturday in Orlando, every ticket would be sold. And, likewise, there is absolutely no excuse for UCF's title game not to be a sellout.

History could be made Saturday.

George O'Leary, the coach for life, is on the verge of rousting the sleeping giant from his slumber.

Who knows what's going to happen if the big fella ever gets that first cup of coffee in him.

The Sentinel also reported that the local mayors announced that Friday is "Conference USA Championship Week" in honor of UCF. Would be nice to have that kind of support in Dallas for SMU . . . if we could get in to the championship game.

Black and gold day

Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty and City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer have each declared this week "Conference USA Championship Week," and are joining UCF President John C. Hitt in declaring Friday "Black and Gold Day."

People are being encouraged to wear black and gold on Friday.
