Because of this relative parity-Coaching is infinitely more important than in College Football. In College Football you can literrally get all the No. 1 Draft Choices that you can convince to come to your school-and this in fact happens. SMU doesn't get a No. 1 Draft Choice-they don't get a Top 500 Draft Choice. College Football is about getting a lot better talent than your opponents. SMU has recruited as poorly as any of its natural and traditional rivals over the years and has competed well with none of its natural and traditional rivals as a result.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Slick Rick be the better recruiter of our current options?

Slick Rick does have baggage, like the many recruiting violations he recieved at Colorado and Washington. He was really fired at UW for lying to his boss about interviewing for the 49ners job and then lying again about betting in the pool. I don't see Turner going for him.

And he is a horrible judge of talent. He was at UW and CU for five years a piece and when he left both schools, their talent levels were very low. And he is the QB coach/OC of the Ravens, a team that cut Derek Anderson and kept Kyle Boller

His problem was participating in a March Madness pool. Hardly a character issue, since he informed U. of Washington about it.

They had a real winner of a compliance officer that basically told him and everyone else there that it was ok to participate in such things.

He's called "Slick" for a reason. His final year at UW he brought in a class ranked number 19 nationally. I believe he had stronger classes as well in previous years, but this was as far back as the rivals database goes.

He would raise our talent level immediately.

SMU already said it will not hire anyone with a past (FACT). He will not be hired. Barnett will not be hired. Charles Manson won't be hired. SMU may end up with Bowden? That is pretty good from where SMU started on this search. I do think Bowden is the fall back guy.

You guys need to do some research on why they call him Slick Rick. The NCAA college pool was the straw that broke the camels back. At Colorado he committed so many recruiting violations that they got sanctions, then he lied to his boss about interviewing for the UW job, then took the UW job and left Colorado with the sanctions. At UW, he was busted again for recruiting violations that resulted in sanctions against the University, lied to his boss about interviewing for the 49ers job, then lied to her again and said he did not particpate in the college basketball pool. Have a hard time believing SMU would hire him. Also, there is no way in hell he would take the SMU job before at least interviewing for UCLA. He was a walk-on QB at UCLA who led them to a Rose Bowl win and got his first coaching job there. It is his dream job.
