USM Notebook: Terry Bowden wants to coach
HATTIESBURG  Terry Bowden said he was "very interested" in getting back into coaching after spending the past nine years in the broadcast booth.
But the former Auburn football coach would not say Thursday whether he had been contacted by Southern Miss or whether he would be interested in filling the vacancy there.
"All I would want to say is that I'm very interested in any program where I feel like I would be a good fit, where there was a need I could fill," Bowden said. "If that means a place that has never won seven games before, then I'd like to help them win seven games. If that means a place that has never won a championship before, then I'd like to help them a win a championship."
USM is looking for a replacement for coach Jeff Bower, whose Golden Eagles (7-5) have logged their 14th consecutive winning season. USM won four Conference USA championships under Bower, the last in 2003.
Bower was forced to resign Monday.
USM athletic director Richard Giannini said late Thursday afternoon that no candidate had been interviewed or offered the job.
Giannini has been fielding inquiries and making contact with potential candidates for the past three days. Giannini said he wasn't sure when the formal interviews would begin, though he repeated that he intended to move "as quickly as possible."
