Wait a second. Didn't Turner want his man by TODAY?

Postby BRStang » Thu Dec 06, 2007 6:43 pm

What happened to all that "we will have a coach in place by Thursday" cr@p? I know that I paraphrased, and I am sure that some people will relay the exact quote which semantically will show that nothing was ever guaranteed by Turner for Thursday, but wtf??

SMU wants a new football head coach named by next Thursday. The comments from SMU President R. Gerald Turner were the first timeline given by anyone directly involved in the search.

Turner said there would be a lot of movement in the next week toward hiring the new coach. The school would like whoever is hired to meet with the Board of Trustees, who hold their December meetings next Thursday and Friday. The board does not have to sign off on the hire - President Turner can do so by himself.

Turner said a hire has yet to be finalized because the candidates SMU is looking at are still working at their current jobs and their seasons have not finished yet. He said the school has been talking primarily with representatives of the candidates rather than directly contacting them. He emphasized no deal has been completed yet with any coach and did not name any candidate that the school has talked to.

Turner confirmed that donors have put together a significant sum of money toward the salary of a new coach, but did not say how much had been raised. Sources have told The Daily Campus the sum is estimated between $10 and $12 million.

He also praised the work of Athletic Director Steve Orsini in the search, saying he has done a good job in talking to people in the coaching community and finding the coach who will succeed at SMU.

The SMU coaching search drama is like a bad Dashboard Confessional song.

believe that the deadline is for the 7th, or at least i would assume so, because the DC published the article about there being the one week deadline last friday.

Crap?

They are obviously going after the man who is their top choice.

What do you propose? If we are in final talks with Coach Johnson
and because the wished for Thursday date passes we should suddenly
throw our hands up and tell him to forget it even-though we may
be extremely close to getting him?

Well, I'm not Orsini and I'm not privy to what is being said or not said. But, if I thought for another minute that PJ is just using SMU, I would pull the rip chord on that guy so fast. It has reached the point where SMU is looking a little pathetic. If I'm Orsini the second I sense we aren't getting him, I dump him and sign the guy I'm working on behind the scenes. (He is working on someone behind the scenes, right? ) If PJ does the dumping and it takes SMU longer than 24 hours to name a new coach, we go back to looking like the same ol' SMOO of the last 20 years.

If I were Orsini, I would publicly chastize PJ in a press conference, saying that PJ was someone who he considered a friend for many years and that he believed PJ when we had a verbal agreement Tuesday night. But after the way PJ has treated him and this university, he no longer considers PJ to be a decent human being, and Duke can have him. And then personally apologize to the Naval Academy for creating this predicament, as he was only acting in what he felt was the best interest of SMU and trusting the words of someone he thought was his friend. (Everyone can save face by apologizing to the troops right?)

And then he can open curtain #2 and out walks.......Mike Shula!

You guys make me laugh. 1. Thursday ain't over for another 3 and a half hours. If there's a drop dead deadline of today for Johnson to say yes to SMU, I'd say he's got until midnight. 2. Who said Johnson had verbally agreed to coach SMU on Tuesday?

So much of what I read here is really speculation. I'm guilty too, but I don't make up facts like that.

If Orsini's raised the kind of money quoted (10-12 mil) for a new coach, there could be a bidding war going on for this guy. My guess is everyone will be trying to match SMU's offer. If that's the case, it'll delay a deal for a few days and we'll get our guy.

Sorry, I was just venting a bit. PJ is starting to anger me. I say we still try and get him through the morning, but after that--cut him loose!

The verbal agreement thing came from the Yoda of the GT board. (Don't remember which thread it is in anymore, but there is a list of quotes from him over the past few days.) Don't know if it was true, but that was the info he was leaking, and the guys over there seem to believe he works in the athletic department or has a loose lipped contact in it.

It's okay, we all vent. :-)

Your explanation is exactly what I'm talking about when I say folks make up facts. It's not that you made up a fact, it's that you read a comment by a guy on the GT board who might be in the athletic department. It's a piece of information that could possibly maybe be true if this guy is possibly maybe sorta somehow connected to the athletic department at GT. The only fact I do know is that someone posted the comment to a message board. I don't know who posted it or why. I have no idea who that person is or where they work.

The thing is, it's information like this that builds frustration here. I saw the comment on CSTV.com saying Johnson's trying to use the SMU job to get a big contract at GT. That could be true. I assume it was written by a professional journalist with good sources. However, the comment was one sentence long and included absolutely no attribution whatsoever. Without more information than that, it's hard to judge how true it is.

Waiting is a hard thing to do, but we must. Speculating while waiting can build frustration and anger. I think we would all be wise to back down a bit on speculation and only deal in things we know to be true.

That would make the guy on CSTV NOT a good journalist with good sources then, no?

Anyway, I thought it was obvious I was being facetious, since I would never seriously suggest Steve-O go out and publicly chastize a coach. Guess I missed the mark on that one! Just threw that reference in there for the drama of the hypothetical news conference.

There is no "deadline" - RGT and/or Steve-O might have said they'd like to have a coach in place by a certain date, but there is no deadline. It's not like the athletic department will close its doors or the world will spin on a different axis if a coach isn't in place yet. Sure, that might have been a desired date, but I'd rather see them hold off until they hire a candidate with whom they are completely happy, rather than merely lobbing a big sack of cash at any moron with a whistle. Steve-O has shown he can identify quality coaches and get them to Dallas. Back away from the ledge, put down all sharp objects and have faith in Steve-O.
