Why not Barnett on a short leash? We're talking about a previous National Coach of the Year that resurrected Northwestern for Pete's sake. His baggage is well known...just acknowledge it, play up how everybody deserves a second chance and then put together a contract that is heavily incentive laden for good behavior and running a clean program. If anything, you would hope the guy learned from his mistakes and do a better job keeping things clean.
Just my thought...and I bet you could get him for less than $2M, then spead some of that green around to get some competent coordinators and recruiters. Just a thought.
That's been my thought all along, but if that was the case, we should have hired him 5 weeks ago when he said he wanted it. We could have someone recruiting at the moment!
why not Barnett.....without any leash?
tired of losing. lets go with Barmett and JUST WIN! C-ya @ Milos!
By taking Barnett, SMU would be sending the message: The Past is the Past. We can either wallow in it, or move forward. Having Wallowed in it for 20 years we now choose to move forward, and so does Gary Barnett.
Both the team and the coach would be in need of redemption, and it seems fitting that they find it together. But that's just me. I'm biased. -CoS
My sentiments exactly. Still would be shocked if it happened.
Agreed. We've apologized and been ashamed of our past mistakes for way too long. We are in no danger of forgetting history and repeating it, no matter what coach we hire.
The hiring of Barnett would make me happy...Sports Illustrated had an article that told that he was railroaded by the press...He can coach and he can recruit...probably be a quick hire and get him in the field to recruit and also keep the offense wide open...Just a thot...Go Mustangs!!!
I've always thought that too. His big mistake was saying that girl that Rick Neuheisel brought in wasn't any good and shouldn't have been on the team. Probably true, but he shouldn't have said it publicly and as angrily as he did. That brought the media hounds to Boulder, and then she claimed she was harrassed/assaulted by the players, more media. Then all of the girls in town who had ever had a problem with a player or wanted media attention ran to the media.....more media. Similar to SMU and the DP, (on a much smaller scale of course,) Colorado took the heat for the same things going on at every other school. Every team, even SMU, takes their recruits out to the strip bars. Granted, it was getting a little out of control out in Boulder, and Barnett didn't reign it in, but that is ALL he is guilty of, and I can't imagine he would let it happen again.
Yeah, but now with our 5 weeks of coaching search, we can say we did our "due diligence" on the market and decided that GB was the best coach available to meet our schools needs.
We can say that we got tired of being played by Paul Johnson's agent and feel that if Coach Johnson really wanted to come to SMU, he would have accepted our offer and not fished for counter-offers. Instead we went with a coach with proven ability to turn a program around. We can add that we did our due diligence and that Barnett has learned and grown from his Colorado experience and will not allow such things to occur at SMU. SMU is a leader in women's sports and Title IX compliance. Blah, blah, blah, blah.
