Great point that I think most people don't comprehend. We are becoming the farthest most outpost in college football, if we aren't already there. Sad that it comes to that in a talent-rich, football-focused state like Texas.

Just getting around to reading this thread this morning, and I was a bit surprised by your "embarassment to be an SMU alum". I think you have to put things in perspective, so let me help you do that:

1) The folks on this board and SMU alums are not the only ones wondering why this search is taking so long (see thread entitled "coaches on the hot seat blog entry - SMU" as an example). The length of this search could definitely prove embarassing depending on who we hire.
2) SMU alums are embarassed that SMU football has been nothing more than a punchline since the DP. Especially this past season where we started getting a little more press, only to have everyone seen us fail miserably at 1-11.
3) With important decisions, people usually have very strong opinions. In that sense, it's been good to see all the posts on this board. It shows that there are people out there who actually give a damn about this school and this program. Have some of them been a little over the top? Absolutely. But unfortunately the internet provides a forum for people to sometimes type up things they wouldn't say face-to-face (myself included).

So let's hold off a little on the "holier than thou" attitude and cut everyone a break.

A good number of SMU alums...in addition to a fair number of SMU students (those I encounter) and a clear majority of the population of Collin County (at least those I encounter and engage in a nonscientific survey) could really care less and are at lthe most somewhat amused that SMU does in fact still play football and that those of us that care hold out some hope that we'll have a 'big name' coach.

Folks that care (us) and those folks whose job it is to comment on college football are pretty much the only people who have an opinion one way or another about how this search is going, IMO. Want an example? Steve O tells Kate (I'm guessing) and Norm "no comment until we hire a guy" and instead of repeated attempts (that is, going past two or three levels of resistance...those that do negotiations know what I'm talking about), the media outlets instead say "ummm. Okay...." And no more has been written or said since. No conjecture. No speculation. Nothing. And no, I'm not saying the DMN has an anti SMU bias. I'm saying the DMN doesn't care, and the only buzz we get is that which we create.

My apologies for the runon sentence.

You're right. Wow, I just wrote a similar post on another thread. Not as lengthy, though.

FYI-The "hot admin babe" that FTT speaks of doesn't work for Sexton anymore and I highly doubt has or will ever have any legitimate info.

Cawdor = Cowher?

Postby Texas Red » Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:06 pm

The witches hail Macbeth as thane of Glamis (his original title) and as thane of Cawdor.

So, FTT's intentional misspelling could be Bill Cowher? This does not make much sense to me, but there it is.

Thane could of course be a play on words for Tulane which might indicate their coach Bob Toledo would be in play, but he would have been hired already since they aren't going bowling.

Glamis could be a play on words for Jerry Glanville. But I would have no idea why the wait on him either.

Plus I could find no ties between Toledo, Glanville and Hayden Fry. So, I'm still flummuxed.

FtT was getting @ss-pounded by some dude named Thane when he was making all of this ridiculous b.s. up for some of you gullible bastards to get all silly about.

Thane's Pounding

Postby Texas Red » Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:06 pm

[deleted] pounding aside, there does seem to be some renewed interest in SMU simply because the coaching search is going on this long. If the new coach is a big name, and if they win, then this whole area will love SMU. In fact, even if the coach is some unknown coordinator, fans around here will love SMU if they win.
