Please explain to me how the school is losing money on the athletic program. I would love to see what the actual costs are for the athletes on scholarship at SMU then show me the total revenue brought in by those sports. I would not be surprised if the school was actually bringing in cash because of athletics.
Class of '91
I don't buy these arguments about SMU being a national joke because of the extended search. Does anyone believe SMU football wasn't a joke already. Frankly, I don't believe at a national level anyone really cares about it one way or the other. And if they did? Well, I wouldn't give a bucket of warm spit about what they think. And that goes double for the faculty. On second thought, I believe there are a few people thinking about it. In Tulsa, Houston, Memphis, New Orleans and the other athletic offices of our conference foes. I think they're concerned we might actually pull this off and even more worrying to them, that SMU is actually serious about returning its program to excellence.
Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.

bring back the dirt field! bring back the all-volunteer football team...made up primarily of theologians...hmmm...!
If faculty members are upset about not having private donations set aside in their name then perhaps they should get to work on becoming famous and founding their own institutes. Or figure out a way to develop fervent departmental loyalties and extra-campus rivalries which attract the attention of wealthy alumni and compels them to give to you lest your mental acuity or resources be transfered or overcome by those of another schools...televised debates, cheerleaders, better merchandising...pay me 500K and I'll help whoever is interested get on that
Don't they calculate it such that scholarships are counted as an expense? If so, I doubt each athlete is bringing in $30,000/yr to make up for it.

yyyeeessss!!!! another person that can see past the end of nose!!!!!
I've seen the numbers. They aren't pretty................
Like someone posted above, you are going to have to overpay a coach to convince them to come to SMU. June Jones seems like the perfect guy to try to overpay and bring in. SO has been looking for a coach that has taken a small, awful football program and has had quick, positive results. Paul Johnson fit that description with a quick turnaround at navy and now JJ who took over a 0-12 program in 1998 and has had very good results. Why not try to get this guy? Seems like a great idea.
PonyMon, don't lump William and Mary into the Club football category, they are 1-AA (or Championship Division as it is now called) and have academic restrictions, but they probably could have beaten us the last three years. They accepted the fact that they'd never win a 1-A national championship and elected 1-AA along with the traditional rivals, Appy State, VMI, Richmond and Delaware.
Since the money was donated for the specific purpose of hiring an elephant (with attendant staff), it should be spent on trying to hire an elephant and not on a science lab. And June Jones would be an elephant. To do otherwise would make the donors stop giving because they would have no reason to believe that money given for a specific purpose would be used for that purpose.
The hiring of Doh was the 1st indication that SO is good & is serious about upgrading our athletic programs.
There is no doubt he will get a very good HC for the football team. But lets be real, they aren't worried about us YET. I can promise u the coaches & players @ UCF, Memphis & elsewhere are working [deleted] improving their own situations & not worrying about us. I'm sure there's some curiosity about the length of time its taking to get a coach but that's about it.
I have to agree. Further, I think Barnett would command less than you quoted. I think he could be had anywhere in the $500,000-1,000,000 range.
I'm not concerned about how our conference mates feel about us. We are just reinforcing the reputation that we are joke among the kids, high school coaches, the kids' parents, and the media which will continue to heap scorn upon us. We can't rely on bringing in tons of jucos, reclamation projects, grade risks, and bad characters to turn this situation around like some state schools. That's why this is such a bad situation - every misstep by us gets magnified and further reinforces the fact that this is not a place to take seriously if you are a good athlete. Even if we get a stud and start doing everything right, it will take 3-5 years minimum to start erasing this reputation we have been creating over the past 20 years......................
