Recruiting Landscape

Postby gostangs » Sat Jan 05, 2008 11:08 am

At the risk of being labeled a sunshiner (only on an SMU board do you get criticised for being optimistic - but lets face it - this job is all upside) - I would think it is possible if Jones takes the position here there would be a fairly immediate splash on the recruiting front. Yes, it is late and most of the top _____(fill in blank with ranking service of choice) have committed verbally, but Jones has a following in the coaching world, and there could be transfers and changes of heart following this announcment - if it happens.

If you are a barely sub-BCS recruit and an offense skill position - do you get excited about waiting 2 yrs to hit the field for D minded Patterson so you can play in a timezone that nobody cares about - or would you prefer to hit the field early with Jones? For that matter, does Tulsa, Rice or Houston feel better then the choice of June Jones who just played in a BCS bowl and produced a Hesiman candidate? Play for the ex high school guy at Baylor and live in the cellar of the big 12 (and in Waco) or play for NFL expereinced coach in Dallas where it should not be so tough to win a conference championship?

Unhappy but really good player for a non- Div 1 team? How bout a transfer that upgrades your education and your atheltic experience at the same time - and play next eyar for someone who knows what the pros are looking for.

Suddenly does not seem like that hard a sell, does it?

I think all the points you made are reasons why I have thought SMU could be very competitive in CUSA sooner rather than later. With the right coach to sell the product, we might just be on to something!!!

You all do know that JJ has never made an in house visit and is known to of worked harder on his golf game than at recruiting. Be careful what you wish for

...just hold your fire on the June Jones run-away train or you will upset the Children. This isn't a done deal.

Who cares about recruiting!? The only thing that's important is that we get ourselves an A+ coach (or at least one that Orsini believes is an A+ coach).
