Coaches' Convention

Postby Pony^ » Thu Jan 10, 2008 12:50 am

Another major part of the AFCA gathering is networking and job hunting. There are several high-profile defensive coordinator posts still open at Auburn, LSU, Miami, Wisconsin, Michigan and Washington. Northwestern also needs a defensive coordinator, as well as an offensive coordinator. That made Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald a popular figure out here.

The hottest name to fill any of those defensive posts is Jon Tenuta, who ran Georgia Tech's defense last year. He is considered by many to be the best in the business.

And expect former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron to land somewhere. I had a chance to eat lunch with him and got the feeling something will break for him soon.

Another job opening that has drawn a lot of attention is the offensive coordinator vacancy at Tennessee. Whomever Phillip Fulmer hires, don't expect the Vols attack to change much.

Many of the coaches I talked to were stunned June Jones got out of Hawaii.

And they aren't shocked the Hawaii athletics director Herman Frazier was fired because of it.

Another hot topic was USC's Pete Carroll wanting to talk to Atlanta about the Falcons coaching position.
