Yes. I am so tired of hearing that he couldn't recruit. He did very well his first couple three classes. But at some point you gotta win to keep the recruits coming in.

Not cut out to be a head coach. Solid defensive coordinator. Highly recommended.

Phil Bennett is probably the worst SMU head coach ever. He had a winless season and a one win season and his road record was horrible. He was given 6 years here and he should have been fired after his second season in which he did not win a game.

I actually disagree with some of the people that say he is a great guy, FWIW. I think he is, by and large, completely full of it. But that is just me.

Long story short, to whoever asked the question:

1) good DC;
2) good salesman;
3) stick him with those roles and he will do fine at Marshall or anywhere else.

Phil Bennett at Marshall might be the best thing for everybody: SMU, Marshall and Bennett. He will probably get a couple of Texas kids to Marshall, which is good for Marshall. He won't be able to spend all of his time in Texas, which is good for SMU. He will have a job at a school with a good football tradition, which is good for Bennett.

At K-State, they were able to recruit JUCO's without any problems to fill holes in the defense. So he was able to have the kind of players that he wanted week in and week out. At SMU, there were always holes somewhere and JUCO transfers were difficult to come by due to academic rules and transferability of hours issues. I think at Marshall, he would not have the admissions restrictions at SMU and could recruit much better there and will not have as many holes to fill. You could do worse.
