its not the passing that JW needs to work on...its the ball handling and timing ... he needs to learn to use that mental QB clock and not hold on to the damn ball so long

He needs to get a quicker release, a stronger arm (too many floating ducks) and get more accurate. Quickly!

Willis will most likely be the starter of course and I think he will, with better coaching, be willing to learn the offense and become a better QB. But he can't just look for that first receiver in the run & shoot, and if he is not open, take off holding the ball like a loaf of bread. That's not going to work with JJ.

Dan Morrison is an *excellent* QB coach. Hawaii had 3 game-ready QBs last year, which was amazing to me. I expect Willis to be a lot better in 2008 with Morrison working with him. Morrison's psychology background is a huge help in his QB coach role.

SMU would have gone harder for JC QBs if they didn't think that Willis could play. The fact that they only signed freshmen QBs indicated to me that they figured they could develop QBs and that they like what they have in Willis. Few true freshmen QBs play in JJ's offense, as it takes awhile to learn the offense.

If the freshmen didn't graduate early to enroll at SMU for the Spring and Willis is the only QB in Spring Practice when they install the offense...Willis will be your starter.

There was a 4-star JC QB (Greg Alexander, 6'5", 240-pounds) available but SMU never bothered to try to get him. He was available because he only had 2 years to play 2...but if SMU thought they needed immediate help they would have gone after him or someone similar. Hawaii got Alexander after they ended up having to suspend the guy that was supposed to be the starter next season.
