Winning at Duke and SMU

Davey O'Brien Legends winner Steve Spurrier crafted one of the '90s greatest programs at Florida. An even bigger accomplishment by the Old Ball Coach might have been winning the ACC title in 1989 at Duke. The Blue Devils had just two winning seasons, both 6-5, in the 10 years before Spurrier took over. And he ran the offense those two seasons.

See if this sounds familiar: small, private school with high academic standards; a tradition of losing; an incoming quirky offensive genius with a QB friendly system. Now will history repeat? Spurrier thinks June Jones has a chance to turn things around on the Hilltop, even if he needed a primer on Conference USA.

"The conference they're in, they can certainly be competitive. Who do they play?" Spurrier asked reporters, getting the rundown of C-USA membership. "They can certainly recruit with those guys. ... They've got a chance."

But he also said it's more than smoke and mirrors. Players make the system, Spurrier said, noting his Duke team featured talent at the skill positions and a veteran offensive line. "They could really play," he said. "Still one of the best lines I ever had."
