OT: Penn State is talking extension with Paterno?

Postby PonyFan » Thu Apr 10, 2008 10:44 am

WTF? Time to pat the man on the back, wish him well and push the wheelchair out of the stadium. Let the man enjoy a few years of people worshipping him even more for what he did for so many years. Doesn't he have a wife? Dude needs to retire - about 15 years ago.

I seriously don't understand why football topics on a football board have to be labeled OT. Seriously.

Because, right or wrong, if he had not someone would have complained that it did not relate to SMU football. It is called a preemptive strike.

The sports writers awarded the 1982 national championship to Penn State (11-1 record) because it was widely believed that Paterno was going to retire at the end of that season. Paterno was also awarded the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 1982.

In 1982, Southern Methodist finished the season as the only undefeated team in Division 1A Football, ending the season at 11-0-1 following their 7-3 victory over the University of Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day. Despite being the only undefeated team, they ultimately finished at number 2 in the AP poll behind Penn State.

Paterno is still on life support 25 years later. Time to move on, Joe.

didn't Joe win a bowl game last year
and finish #3 in the country in 2005?

i bet they'll have the team bus stop at the nursing home
to pick him up if they have to

the guy seems to still enjoy what he is doing
and i see no signs of dementia

what the hell, let the 81 year old man coach!

word on the street is Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, who turned the Rutgers program around, wants the head coaching job at Penn State and is waiting for paterno to retire. Also the reason he turned down the U of Michigan offer last season. First accepted then declined. he was an assistant at Penn State 1991-1995. The plot thickens as assistant coach at Penn State, defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, maybe slated for the next Penn State head coaching job. Bradley has been waiting at Penn State for 33 years. Paterno wants an inside guy to follow him but turning down Schiano, if he’s willing, would be hard to pass up.
