IRVINE - A 15-year-old football player at Northwood High School collapsed and died after practice Wednesday evening, police said.
Dylan Bradshaw, 15, was in spring football practice for the junior varsity team when he began having an apparent asthma attack and collapsed shortly after 5 p.m., Northwood officials said. He was a defensive lineman.
A physical trainer at the scene took him to the locker room, where he went into cardiac arrest.
The trainer initiated CPR, Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said.
Paramedics took Dylan to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m.
Handfield said it usually takes a couple of weeks for the Orange County Coroner's Office to determine the cause of death in these kinds of cases.
Police said that pads were not being worn. During the spring, football teams are not allowed to wear protective gear, according to regulations.
"Grief counselors will be here tomorrow (Thursday), and we will deal with it the best we can," said Dean Toohey, Northwood athletic director and assistant football coach.
School officials said that Dylan is the third student to die this year. One died in a car wreck, and another died from leukemia.
Because it's only spring, school athletic officials did not know whether the player would go onto to varsity or if he would remain on junior varsity.
Asked about whether Dylan would have been up to the varsity team next September, Toohey said: "It is pretty early to tell."
