During Hawaii's run to the Sugar Bowl last season, the Warriors were paced by record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan. Then-coach June Jones faced similar system-versus-quarterback questions.

"He was obviously a very good player, but we won three games last year, including two on the road with our backup quarterback, when Colt couldn't play," said Jones, who is now the coach at SMU. "Our system makes the quarterback better than he is. But, at the same time, if you have a really gifted quarterback, he makes you better than you are."
