They are trying to find a way to get you to buy a spot.

Special_Delivery_Smu_Fans wrote:"The Boulevard opens 3 hours prior to kickoff and closes approx. 20 minutes prior to kickoff."http://www.smu.edu/athletics/football/the_boulevard.aspIs this a new official statement or has that always been a published policy? I wonder if they are going to try and "enforce" this in some manner? Hopefully a more competitive team with June Jones in charge will take care of this and people will be motivated to leave the BLVD party for the games. Can anyone familar with other programs that have great tailgates comment? Do USC, LSU, Ole Miss tailgates shut completely down at kickoff or do they have fans that just stay at the tailgate and not go into the stadium?
This has been the policy for probably 3 or 4 years now, but is loosely enforced. The "closing" 20 minutes before the game refers to the serving of alcohol/food of any SMU related organization. Fraternities, Mustang Club, Business School, etc all have tents which are required to have beverages served by licensed "bar tenders". 20 minutes prior to the game, these organizations are no longer allowed to serve patrons. This was started a couple years back in an effort to get people to go to the game rather than continue sitting on the 'Vard drinking. There is nothing they can really do, or would care to take the time to do, about individual tent owners sitting at their tent I would guess.
I actually am for the idea and think it probably helps to an extent get people to the game a little sooner.

the hours for the bvld (3 hrs b4 game and closing 20 min. b4 game) apply to the groups that have bartenders (usually student groups) - the rest of us are unaffected

So basically some of you are saying nothing is changed from the last couple of years and that the closing time is just for the special groups. Thanks for the feedback.

Why would you not want these groups to be there more than 3 hours before the game? Or is that a "you must set up BY 3 hours before" not "you cannot set up UNTIL 3 hours"?

I think the 3 hours rule references when the BLVD will be blocked off and official 'varding begins. I have never known, and do not anticipate it to change, for SMU to regulate how early on the day of the game that you can go set up your tailgate area and begin enjoying the festivities.
