Since y'all care so much about our TV deal, let me give you the quick run down of this season.
Sat 8-30 at New Mexico Sat 9-6 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN Versus Sat 9-13 STANFORD the mtn Sat 9-20 at SMU CBS College Sat 9-27 at Oklahoma Big 12 TV Contract (either ABC, FSN, or Versus) Sat 10-4 SAN DIEGO STATE the mtn Sat 10-11 at Colorado State CBS College Thur 10-16 BRIGHAM YOUNG (Thur.) Versus Sat 10-25 WYOMING the mtn Sat 11-1 at UNLV CBS College Thur 11-6 at Utah (Thur.) CBS College Sat 11-22 AIR FORCE Versus Notice the trends. 10 of 12 games on Saturdays. 11 of 12 games televised. All road games on either Versus or CBS College (or Big 12 Contract). The mtn is only used for 3 home games where a TCU fan should be in the stands at ACS anyway. Also, each team in the conference gets in excess of $1.1 million per year under this contract. NO TUES WED FRI SUN GAMES! Plus, if you have DirecTV and the mtn, you get a ton of MWC coverage and recap each week. It is an outstanding contract for our fans.
Got no problem with the destinations, it is just the distance. We have been there and done that. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
True, but they don't constitute natural rivalries. Your perrenial bowl teams should be filling up that stadium. Maybe some day.
MWC > CUSA. and the reason for the MTN had a lot to do with the fact that ESPN was pushing MWC games to be played during the week and with bad slotted times on TV. with the DirecTV deal, its greatness for MWC fans. Go SMU. Go Air Force Academy.
Not a particularly great argument SmmBoy when CUSA Bowl teams might see from 12,000-18,000 in Ford. The CUSA does not and will not ever have the upper hand on the road attendance argument at least not in the West. I admit that CUSA does have other proximity factors that are beneficial such as team travel expenses which I suspect are now even more substantial.
Not exactly my argument, Stal-O. Ford has seen how many 10-loss teams in its short history? - and the poor attendance reflects this. Amon Carter has had 7 straight bowl teams and what % of the stadium is filled? It's almost as if FW has gotten bored with the froggies winning because of the unfamiliar SanDiego States, UNLVs and Wyomings of the world. It will be interesting to see how our attendance jumps at the height of the JJ high scoring/winning machine.
we typically fill about 3/4 full, 32k in 2006. Which compares with the CUSA winner that year S. Miss with 30k, and closest winning record small private school in CUSA Tulsa with 21K game. I think we are holding our own.
What's the point of this discussion?
Fact: The MWC has a mediocre TV deal. Fact: CUSA has a mediocre TV deal. Both have numerous games on non-mainstream channels. Both include additional airtime for coaches' shows, conference roundups, etc. We should both be happy that we are on TV, but nobody has anything to brag about here.
Rice + Tulane + Tulsa + UTEP + UH + CUSA EAST = Permanent Poor Road Attendance in conference games.
No substantial difference in TCU playing Western State Schools plus National schools like BYU and Air Force. In fact. "i''d bet many of those Western schools might outdraw the CUSA schools in Road Attendance. Pull out the attendance figures for SMU in CUSA games. It is horrendous. CUSA is not and never will be the panacea for SMU's attendance issues. Its a myth born from necessity SMU will always have to essentially pull the crowd for CUSA games since road attendance will always be weak.
how do you figure? MWC ranks higher in the Sagrin ratings every year since TCU joined.
cant speak for Phxfan but i think he might have meant based on BCS success. Utah so far is the only MWC school to break in, the WAC has had BSU and Hawaii It will be interesting to see what conference is better this year with Utah and BYU looking to break the BCS and Fresno from the WAC
Just my 2 cents. The MWC did C-USA and the WAC a favor by taking the big CSTV contract and shunning ESPN. It made the WAC and C-USA more important to ESPN and more valuable. I don't know about the C-USA but the WAC signed a new TV deal with ESPN that increased from $1 million to $4 million and more TV games. That means more national TV exposure that will help recruiting. CSTV does not give the kind of national exposure that ESPN does. It would be to ESPN's favor to promote and buildup WAC and C-USA TV ratings. CSTV does not have that kind of clout.
Its not all about money. TV exposure and recruiting are important if you want to build up your program and conference. ESPN loved JJ due to the type of exciting football style that he promoted. If he can develop that type of football program at SMU, I am sure ESPN would like to give JJ more exposure like he got at Hawaii. His reputation at ESPN is solid.
