Karen Warren Houston Chronicle
Cougars defensive standout Phillip Hunt returns home to the Metroplex today as UH faces SMU.

The University of Houston’s senior defensive end was on the preseason watch lists for every major award — Lombardi, Hendricks and Nagurski — and was recently named a midseason All-America by College Football News.

When Conference USA coaches talk about the Cougars, the first name mentioned by many isn’t quarterback Case Keenum, who leads the nation in total offense. It’s not running back Bryce Beall, who has stitched together consecutive 100-yard rushing games. And it’s not any of the 14 wide receivers who have hauled in at least one reception this season.

Nope, the first name mentioned often is Hunt’s, and with good reason.

While the offensive players can hurt opposing teams in the figurative sense Hunt can literally hurt them with one of his teeth-jarring sacks.

Family reunion
His family and friends will have chance to watch Hunt, a product of Fort Worth Dunbar High School, when the Cougars (3-3 overall, 2-0 in Conference USA) travel to Dallas for today’s game against SMU at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

“It feels great knowing that I’m going home to play in front of the hometown crowd,â€

That [deleted] is an a-hole. No way UH is better than Tulsa and we know how that game went. UH is not 35 points better than us at home. I'm sure the writer looked at our record and our horrible D and thought he was a swami, having no idea what happened last week.

Didn't say we were going to win, just that we aren't going to lose by 35 at home at this point in the season.
