I think when the PA announcer is drowning out our student noise or when he's telling us to do things we are already doing, then he can get the axe. But until then, I think we need him. While "the Hill", "Pony Up", "LONG 3" all hurt the ear, for the first time in a long time I actually felt the crowd was working for the Home team.
SMU hasn't had any stadium tradition in quite some time (other than drunk students making fun of away team players/watergirls...or the occasional stolen helmet) and every year offers a brand new group of freshman the opportunity to finally realize/pass on that tradition. If Orsini has come to terms with that fact that he's going to have to spoon-feed fanhood and team spirit down all of our throats, he's a smart man. Frankly, I'd rather this than be embarrassed by a lackluster/frustrated student section and a meager/sedentary west sideline. Sure, hearing the PA basically announce your crappy fan behavior is embarrassing but that's just the state of SMU Football 2008.

The line should be drawn at taunting the other team with comments like, Are you liking what you're seeing?, and see what some noise can do? These comments are heard by the opponent too. Classless and self-defeating. Save the gloating for after the game.

Obviously you have never played the game Nacho, or at least not well. A player doing his job never hears the PA announcer. If he does, his head is where it should not be. (I know TWSS)

I played as much varsity as you did.
In years past I was on the field for many years.

I dont beleive those comments were aimed at the other team. i am pretty sure they were aimed at the fans . . . who by the way for the first time in a long time cheered and made more noise than the visitors.
I admit he was cheesy, but I prefer that (if it gets the crowd to cheer when they are freaking supposed to be) to monotone, "smith on the tackle gain of 3". if we had a packed stadium of rabid fans who knew when to cheer and never needed to be told/coaxed to stand up . . . fine, go monotone. until then, as others have stated on this board, I support him and look forward to no more "Pony Up" song!!!
Sports, and all that implies.

Then I guess your head was not in the game.
By the way, I wore blue on Saturday and lived.

Re: The Pony Up Song
If Orsini is going to continue doing it, maybe he can get local guest musicians to sing renditions or new songs. Maybe then at least we can add some novelty and not dread the opening (which was a B/C+ if you took out the background singers). Not too long ago Adidas approached musicians from the home cities of every MLS team and asked them to compose a song to rally their fans. Dallas FC's song turned out to be a little less than inspiring but maybe a similar concept could apply. Maybe Erykah Badu, SMU alum Edie Brickell, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors), Norah Jones or other Booker-T grads can be utilized
"Hoops" by Polyphonic Spree...Please, for you to enjoy:

Jackopierce
I wore a very nice red/blue polo with an SMU/helment logo on the front. Quite fashional If I say so myself. I can't bring myself to wear white after Labor day. I'll probably wear it again since it was lucky. I was very comfortable unlike that humid Houston fiasco where even white couldn't overcome it.

Cactus Pryor is still alive. I think it was his brother, whose name i can't remember, who was such a great pa announcer for UT for many years. The brother passed away a few years ago I think.
That would be Charlie Pryor.
No - Wally Pryor. Been going to UT games since before I turned 1.
Wally Pryor announced the UT games through the 1990s...
Both Wally and his brother, Cactus are alive and well in Austin, TX....
