Questions for this season

Postby MustangMan » Wed Jul 25, 2001 2:00 pm

Who will be the starting QB? (Luker)

Who will handle the placekicking? (Crowley is the incumbent, but from what I understand, the coaches plan to give the freshmen every opportunity to win the job. One of them will be the punter from Day 1.)

Will there be a change in offensive philosophy to create more running room for the receivers? (Not likely)

Is D.D. Lee healthy enough to hold down the middle linebacker job? (My guess: He'll be fine, and we'll have a great LB crew.)

Who will be the starting safeties? (We know Garrett and Rutledge will be the starting corners, and Leroy Price and Ruben Moodley probably will start at safety. But I hear Don Stansbury is good enough to crack the safety rotation -- this year.)

Can the offensive line open holes for Briggs, Kincade, etc., and can they keep the quarterbacks alive through the season? (Remains to be seen)

Same as always - If our o & D line improve will will win some games that people do not think we have a chance to win. I have seem some change in attitude and hope that the team comes out ANGRY to play every game.

Iam here to tell you that this a new team. You have always heard the expression don't ever say die. Well, this team will suprise you, this year.

Here is the breakdown, unless we have injuries during two-a-days. (not in any particular order)

QB: Luker

RB: Briggs, of course

WR: Freeman/Cardwell, Ford, Cunningham

TE: another no brainer, Hampton

OL: Slaten, McCarthey, Reindl/Chandler, Chandler/Harris, Gober

DL: Aldridge, Croy, Birdwell, Pratt

LB: Viloria - from there it is a battle - lots of good ones. My guess is: Riley and B.J. Williams. At least for now.

DB: O'Neill, Dorsey/Rushbrook, Garrett, Rutledge

From what I have heard, DD Lee is expected to play this year, but he has not been able to participate in the summer work outs because of his knee. He still looks like he is favoring that leg. IF he recovers, WATCH OUT!

OL- Slaten, McCarthy, Chandler, Gober, Davis
LB- James, Villoria, Riley
SS- O'Neil (Price out for the year)
FS- Moodley

What's the possibility of using BJ Williams at FS? Does he have the skills? I know he's more of a FS in size, and could probably provide a pretty intimidating presence in the defensive backfield

Price is out for the year? WHat happened to him?

No Townsend Hargis in your lineup, Mickey?

And M-Maverick, if BJ Williams is a starting LB .... there's two ways to look at that. Either he had a monster camp and beat out Jarrian James, or we're in real trouble. Either way, I think the starting LBs will be VViloria, DD Lee and JJames

from what I've seen and read, Jarian James (pound for pound) is the most vicious "hitter" on this team. I like him at LB or if he has the speed, at SS.

Judson Davis contributed on our OL 2 yrs ago before his injury. I thought his was a career ending injury. If he can return to form, that's a huge plus for the depth on our OL. I'm impressed by the fact that Townsend Hargis, in a year's time, has apparently shed 30 lbs of fat and that has been converted to muscle. He was recruited by SEC & ACC schools and came out of spring practice listed as a starter.

We need an attacking defense that will create some turnovers and give our offense some field position (unlike last year when it was the other way around). We have a maturing defense and we might just have a 2-deep OL which is critical to sustaining drives late in games.

Call me cautiously optimistic. If we can win one of our 1st two games, we'll be O.K. If we win both, look out! I don't really want to consider the third possibilty...not at this time of year when we are all trying to put last year behind us!

PonyGirl:

Price hasn't recovered from a shoulder injury last year that was aggravated in spring. Out for year.

Hargis- Going to be great, but not ready to beat out Gober or Davis for a starting spot yet.

Sorry, gone for the weekend.

Price has a shoulder and wrist injury. There is no chance.

TO PONY GIRL:
I have been around this team long enough to know that JJames has not been here for the entire summer and BJ has. BJ has been Belin's boy forever. Does that mean that JJames will not be able to beat BJ out, NO - ABSOLUTELY NOT - but, going into two-a-days that is the lineup.

M maverick I hope you are right. Attitude means so much. Time for the kids to remember and honor our past and tradition. I've seen some fire in the past. When it is there, we've kick some butt. Here's to a butt kicking season.

Go Ponies!

From what I hear, the change in attitude is entirely because of the arrival of The Diesel as strength coach. When we were flirting with the idea of a game against Kansas State, I heard Coach Faucette had the guys so wound up that they were thinking they not only could compete, but also could walk into Manhattan and walk out with a win. If he's really that moticational, the kids should be working out like freaks in the weight room, and Diesel should give EVERY pre-game speech. Then all the players will have the energy and enthusiasm Chris Cunningham shows before every game.
