Houston Chronicle reporting:
At long, long, long last, it’s official.
Former University of Houston quarterback Blake Joseph is a Sam Houston State Bearkat.
Sam Houston announced on Tuesday that Joseph, who spent four years at UH, transferred and has one year of eligibility remaining. Joseph started five games during his time at UH, completing 120 of 184 passes for 1,581 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He went into preseason drills at UH last year on even footing with Case Keenum, who won the starting job and emerged as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year. The transfer has been in the works since spring. Cougars coach Kevin Sumlin granted Joseph a release even though it left UH with walk-on Cotton Turner as the No. 2 quarterback, saying, “It’s the right thing to do.â€
“The kid deserves a chance to play,†UH offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen said. "He's a good player."
Joseph, a Bryan High alum, will compete with Bryan Randolph for the starting job. Randolph was the backup to Oklahoma transfer Rhett Bomar last season.
“(Joseph) is athletic with a big arm,†Bearkats coach Todd Whitten said. “He has some Division I starts under his belt. I think he is somewhat of a proven commodity.â€
