Sanders tops SMU's wealth at receiver
10:43 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 26, 2009
UNIVERSITY PARK – Senior receiver Emmanuel Sanders, a preseason first-team All-Conference USA pick, is aiming to break 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. He is already the first player in SMU history to record three 600-yard receiving seasons.
Sanders, Aldrick Robinson and Terrance Wilkerson lead a deep group of receivers. It's unclear who will be the fourth first-teamer, but SMU does have options. Former quarterback Justin Willis is back from a fractured fibula to contend.
Coach June Jones has praised Cole Beasley, Cole Loftin, Bradley Haynes and freshman Darius Johnson.
On Wednesday, Jones even said Johnson, out of Missouri City Hightower, is "starting to look like Emmanuel on film. It's starting to be where I can't tell the difference."

I know we'd all love to see Darius on the field quickly. However, I don't know that I wouldnt rather see him redshirt. Who would raise their hand in favor of not having Emmanuel this year? That's what wouldve happened if he hadnt redshirted his freshman year. Remember when we were ecstatic about Serge's appeal allowing him to play vs sitting out a couple of years ago? Well, our defense sucked anyway. Who wouldnt like to have Serge back this year?
Oh, and remember Emmanuel's true freshman year. One freshman WR didnt redshirt. And his legacy is a dropped sure TD vs. TCU.
I wont be brokenhearted if Darius redshirts.

He ain't going to redshirt so a bunch of possession WRs can catch 8-9 yard passes every game. This is going to seem silly in about a month. SMU needs guys like Johnson to make this offense run the way its supposed to.

the best will play. we need a quality running back to emerge, block, run and catch. the 5th reciever in this offense is a nightmare for opposing D's.

My opinion on redshirting is simple. What would you rather have...a year of someone as a true freshman, or a year of the same guy as a 5th year senior?
This thing is still in the rebuilding phase. We're not winning anything of note this year. Let's build for the future. Redshirt everybody as long as there are good options. If it's close - redshirt. Only burn the shirt if there is no other viable option. Or if the player is such an obvious major force that he's a clear cut starter or likely early entry NFL candidate (in which case get what you can out him before he's gone).
This is what top teams do, it's how they reload quickly year after year.

But what if he were to leave school early for the draft? Then we're shortchanging ourselves a year he could have played. (A guy can dream, right?)

If Beasley does indeed win the fourth wide receiver slot, we are looking at a very tiny set of wide outs.
Sanders 6-0 Robinson 5-10 Wilkerson 5-10 Beasley 5-9
I realize the Run N Shoot doesn't really put a premium on height but I'd like to see us utilize a guy like Bradley Haynes or even Cole Loftin who have a bit of size. I also think Chayse Joubert is going to be a real player but could probably benefit from a full redshirt season. Darius Johnson will be starting by the third or fourth game of the season IMO.
Back off Warchild seriously.
